rawkus records is finally, though slowly, releasing music
from pharoahe monch's long completed 2nd solo album...
here's the first single available for stream.

click to be infected by 'agent orange'

it's not experimental but it's really intelligent and raw
hip-hop.. you'll like the anti-bush/needless war lyrics if
you actually listen to 'em, maybe you'll like his voice
(maybe you won't), maybe you'll like the techno style synths
(maybe you won't). it's worth a listen anyway, what do you
have to lose?

post comments here, good or bad.

i forgot to mention how hilarious and witty all of the puns
are... and warn people to look out for the deltron 3030
homage in the turntable effects and choral background
(sampled?)

"comments here, good or BAD"
not my thing...it makes me want to play it fast forward (the
beat seem nice, the thing i dislike the most is this multi
vocal)
oh, and i have nothing against hip hop in general, i almost
bought the 50 cent album :)

to some pretty fast music for the whole day)

Nice, synths reminds me a bit of the track someone here did
"Very Scary".

The beat is one of those impossible not to nod your head to
ones...

Are Rawkus always this tardy with releases?

rawkus are the worst! monch album was finished by february
2002 at the latest (meaning possibly late 2001), the mos def
rock project will NOT be released by rawkus after months of
meetings (it'll be handled by MCA proper), last emperor
never got one of his albums released, skillz' latest album
has been delayed for a year, talib kweli's most recent album
was finished 9 months or so before it was released, novel
(their first r&b singer)'s album isn't yet released but has
been a promo for many months, the best songs on soundbombing
3 were put on an advance promo a year before the retail
version without any of the good tracks was released.........
etc!

anyway, this song is really good, i hope more people give it
a listen. he's one of my favorite emcees and his new album
should be good if rawkus doesn't ruin it.

rawkus = independent as fox

they really are the fucking worst.. you can look to that
whole 'establishment' (and what a loose establishment that
is) to see that integrity is virtually nonexistent in
underground hiphop (home of the purists and
'true-schoolers'.. so if it doesn't exist there, it doesnt
exist anywhere within the genre).. an
artist/producer/label's integrity is pretty much dependent
(so much for being 'independent as fuck' huh?) on its
obscurity, or hunger or its value as a unit-shifter for the
label under which they're employed

even pharaohe slipped up a bit when his album's release got
swept up in the late 90's wave of rawkus' going for theirs..
so to speak.. need I remind u of some of the godawful
commercial retreads on his album Internal Affairs? he had to
know he was better than that.. and that applies to the many
others who followed a similar path

I hate hearing intelligent artists w/ discographies to be
very pround of making rediculous party anthems and that..
though I know it's not worth living as a starving artist
especially when the artists on the other side of the fence
are (osten[tatiously]sibly, at least) living it up, with all
the excess and frivolity that would make any purist feel
like they're missing out on something.. even if it
conflicted with their integrity.. I was talking with celph
titled once, and he said he barely scraped by with the money
he was making as a producer (keep in mind he's also an emcee
and a label owner) and would jump at the chance to sell-out
or compromise his sound if it meant it would take care of
the bills and feed his kids.. while I respect his talent now
(then?) as a producer.. I didnt respect his position which
was, as he stated, that he "hate[s] hip-hop purists".. I
feel like people like that are just contaminating the waters
.. there's enough shitty hip-pop out there. we dont need
creative, talented people adding to that.. widening the void
in listenable, more cerebral production and lyricism

see also: wyclef, "bobby digital," oc's "bon appetit," BDI
Thug ($5 if you know who that was), jay dee etc etc etc

a lot of the aforementioned criteria is the reason for last
emporer's album never being released .. it actually had
worthwhile rza production on it (and a laughable tale .. no
pun intended .. about a world of cat-people = !?!?! but
we'll ignore that) and it was very well written and produced
(titsworth did u ever hear the track w/ poetic?)

and soundbombing 3!? are u kidding me!?!? it was like the
godfather 3 of that series.. it was completely commercial
and many good songs were left off as u said

then again, you have to consider this industry's urban
roots.. and that many of these starving artists would've
been starving either way.. so u really cant blame them for
going for the money that has evaded, and been kept from them
for so long

i think you and i are the only people who mention jay dee
(j. dilla!!) on here theo! we rock like that. i love how jay
dee, madlib, and pete rock are consummate musicians and most
kids here think hip-hop is ALL recycling of old stuff,
simple loops, etc.!

theo, i made a post last summer about the last emperor /
poetic / esthero track. no one gave a flying fuck, even
after i linked the lyrics and told people it was poetic's
last song before dying of cancer and his verse about his
dying days is breathtaking.

soundbombing 3 early advance promo had some good tracks on
it actually.. but i agree, the retail release is dog shit,
tho i think the mos def, q-tip, kweli, and roots tracks are
"decent" (below average for all of them, but ok)

as for what celph titled said, i have to kinda agree... i
don't like hip-hop purists either. as common said on def
poetry jam about "chat room geeks critiquing my b-boy
physique, who the fuck made YOU hip-hop police?!" some of my
fave hip-hop albums have actually sold millions, so i don't
buy that whole underground = da best!!! ideaology at all.
some really good music DOES manage to catch on. i hope
monch's next joint finds him the commercial success he
deserved with his last solo album (which is now out of
print, sadly).

yes, it is real audio... sorry. i prefer winamp and WMP
myself, but for occasions like this, radiohead webcasts, and
any other sites with good music in real audio, the "real one
player" is a must-have program...

i hope more people gave this FULL SONG a listen than just
those who posted... you'll like the song i bet

I like a healthy balance between mainstream (not
intentionally commercial, that is) and underground.. doing
the underground thing just for the sake of being underground
and because there's no other place where u belong in the
industry (hi anticon!) is kindof rediculous.. actually
though, what's more rediculous is those with a dogmatic
allegiance to the underground.. because a few kids in their
high school thought it was cool.. they wont listen to
ANYTHING other than that.. some dont even listen to other
kinds of music at all.. (this is north jersey though,, it
might be different elsewhere)

I actually havent heard that last emporer/poetic track yet..
I had no idea esthero was on it as well ...interesting

my mention of jay dee was sortof a criticsm. though some
other artists deserve a place on that list before him (like
royce 5'9" .. em didn't put u on.. okay.. but be patient..
dont run off and do a willa ford song for christ sake..
WILLA FORD!?!? she wasn't even popular in the TRL crowd for
more than a month!!!)

I liked that q-tip freestyle.. but it didnt salvage the ship
that appearences from missy and jt money etc helped sink..
the rza/last emporer/prince paul track "the one" I thik it
was called.. was pulled because rza got in trouble for
breach of contract.. by appearing on other artists' albums
(either without credit or because they were on different
labels.. I dont remember the details on that one_

track.

i think a few peepz d/l'd it......it was so beautiful and
sad......and the lyrics were so heartfelt!!

unfortunately the streaming stuff doesn't work for me =/,
but i'll keep trying to catch some AGENT ORANGE!!!

Decent song, I didn't care for the chorus, it got really
redundant after a bit. Although the lyrics we're witty,
Anti-pop is still da best.

it's decent music, but i can't believe this is one of the
rappers you put on your list of emcees that make aesop rock
shit in comparison. what's with all the "like kennedy...
like mcveigh (sp?)... resident evil... playstation...
minority report" i feel that i've heard enough silly
analogies from every emcee with nothing to say. sounds a
bit generic.

i don't think i missed much of it. it's probably just that
i look to rap for different things you. i'm almost certain
of that actually.

i'm certain of it too... but on the other hand, you can
catch the words without catching all of the wordplay. on my
4th listen i'm still catching some of the puns he makes.
he's really good at wordplay. what's different about the
topics he alludes to versus your aesop rock is he makes
things accessible. this is hip-hop, not some art film... if
he made references to the literature he reads (and he's a
smart dude) it'd be boring and pretentious. instead he uses
cultural milestones to make greater points that a lot of
people (like yourself) can identify with, without
necessarily having been aware they felt that way. not all of
my favorite emcees follow these same basic guidelines but a
lot of them do. i'm educated enough to "get it" when rappers
make obscure references but i'm a hip-hop fan enough (and
i'm not saying you're not, just talking about myself here)
to know they don't fit naturally in most songs.

i'm not a big fan of aesop either.

i don't think pharoahe should make reference to literature
he reads in place of references to cultural milestones, i'm
just bored with the analogies in this format all together.

i'm more interested in poetry and the way one can illustrate
their personal life in a way that reflects the
world/society/whatever, rather than just blatantly talking
about the world/society/whatever. also, there is a certain
emotional quality that tends to comes through when an artist
touches on their own personal life.

also, i don't ever hear singsong writers sing about how good
of a singer they are, or much better they are than other
singers. why do rappers have to do this? i get fed up with
this and it's not just a complaint i have with pharoah or
other i'm not into; even my favorite emcees are guilty on
occasion. i can't think of a sillier thing to rap about
than how good of a rapper one is. i can really get into a
song and it'll have me fooled until suddenly, "yall fools
are stumbling over your words, i drop shit like you never
heard" or some bs like that. i could care less how highly
somebody thinks of theirself.

p monch frequently has some very poetic lines in his songs,
just not all of 'em, and he makes it clear he's not about
pretty lyrics. "he a street nigga" (to paraphrase pharrell
williams talking about roscoe p. coldchain). he's just one
educated, soulful, sharp-witted street nigga. doesn't mean
he isn't subtle sometimes or that he doesn't touch on his
own life (i could list several very heartfelt personal
songs). he's just not humble to a fault, which, for me, gets
old (sage francis aka "tim" and other anticonartists (let's
be honest here, most of them are conning college kids into
thinking they're "real" and/or "down" when they're not) take
note).

also, i must admit, that singer/songwriter comparison is
just bunk and you know it.... come on. apples and oranges.
hip-hop is rooted on competition, you knew that when you
became a fan, don't lose sight of it now because you're
under the (false) impression that (some of) your fav white
rappers don't do it. they some flashy muthafuckaz, they just
do it in different (and more pretentious) ways.

holy shit this song sounds even better in 44khz 192kbps
stereo... the way the drums crash like a wave in the intro
and the thump of the bass do NOT translate well in the real
audio version.. this song would be huge if rawkus would ever
properly promote their artists
