i just came across that name and listened to a few sound samples... i awaited something merzbowic or gothic because of the S&M artwork, but from what i heard it's rather... experimental jazz maybe? - and it sounds very interesting!
any of you like? (i'm sure there are some) : )

actually, i found naked city by accident. I saw the movie "Rivers & Tides" a documentary about Andrew Goldsworthy, an installation artist. The soundtrack was amazing - and it was by some guy named Fred Frith.
When I went online to look for his shit, Naked City came up - I guess he did stuff with them. I'm with you - it is all very different - some of the stuff I found was ambient and dark, with real minimalist structure. Maybe someone else will know more?

I found an old post on this board that describes Naked City/John Zorn as "Jewish-American hard-core punk avant-garde jazz." hehe. I did not know that he produced Mr. Bungle. That's somecrazyshit.

woo i like to see this topic on an electronic music board. :)
john zorn is one of the forces that got me into experimental music in the first place, way back in college. naked city is just one of the great projects this man has headed, he's a huge figurehead in avant jazz and improvised music worldwide. it's pretty much from starting to listen to zorn and john cage that i got into improvised music myself.
zorn has also published tetsu inoue on his tzadik label, along with another fantastic electronics improvisor ikue mori. i haven't kept up with the label as of late, but i remember always wishing he would publish more electronic music that integrated improvsiation and noise, because i've always liked his taste in most the artists on the label.

Some really dark, ambient and minimal naked city stuff is from an album called Absinthe, and there is some other cool shit (classical 'covers' of sorts) on Grand Guignol. the 2nd half of that album is a lot of hard-core noise stuff reminiscent of Painkiller (Zorn, Laswell, Mick Harris, Yamataka Eye, etc.), so be careful... ;) my favorites on that album are Prophetiae Sybillarum and Gob of Spit (if that's any indication).

oh i love Naked City... only got the s/t album... but it's a masterpiece from start to finish.
got to get me Radio, Absinthe, Grand Guignol.
i'm too busy to start talking but for more John Zorn check out his label tzadik.
also for people who enjoy Naked City i would recommend Mr Bungle's 'Disco Volante'.

...does anyone have the Black Box?
2 discs, Torture Garden (42 short tracks) and Leng Tch'e (1 long track), and from what i've read some very "explicit" artwork in it...
