haha, i hardly ever use the cross fader other than like this
LEFT SIDE
NOW RIGHT
etc
thats all you really need when mixing snares at least :D
i dunno, i guess just practice practice and something else i don't remember
i can't scratch much with my left hand, i should practice it
infact, i'm gonna go practice right now, with my newly aquired copies of higgins and defluxion :D!!

' do you know any excercises to get your hands more nimble?'
I'm sure there is one you're already familiar with.
Good luck (with DJing), don't just let it be a hobby though, let it engross your life.

A good way of practicing becoming ambidextrous at DJing is to alternate your setup from "left style" to "right style" every couple of months. Just use "centre" for when you are actually practicing for playing out as it's actually the easiest. (word in speech marks refers to where the mixer goes in relation to the decks)
warming your hands either by putting them under a tap (but dry well after!), or put them under your armpits if you can't get to toilets will make your fingers a bit more responsive. This works for gamesplaying as well as DJing...
If you want to get a book I recommend "How to DJ: Properly" by Frank Broughton & Bill Brewster.

Oh yes and if your serious about scratching you need to practice at least an hour a day on average.

How to DJ: Properly... Got it! Well, from the library, I don't even have any mixers or turntables or whatnot, I just find this sort of thing interesting.
I hope to start DJing at some point in my life...that's right...I'm not really a DJ! Fooled y'all!

It's an excellent book and it's written by two very good, experienced DJs who can both write (n ghost writer). We knew you weren't a DJ anyway- you said before :P

forget scrathing, learn hoe to listen to tracks. programming is the ultimate dj trick, cause if all you care about is scracthing, welllll, all you are gonna have is people looking at you, and NOT dancing... and inorder to have people dance, you must actually give a shit about how you put together track and such... however, DONT like have predetermined sets and shit, cause this too is kinda wierd, just pratice with the decks for like a year, match beats, buy GOOD music,(cause one day you will luck back at all the crap you both when you were starting out and slap yourself) and have FUN. and one more thing don't try to look like a dj, this willl surely put an end to your goal.
btw i've been playing for 9 years, trust me scrathing will come with due time, or else you'll grow to hate it.

He he, "programming is the key" is the main point that book I recommended emphasises. It's true, if you scratch for longer than a bars worth people stop dancing.
Rzezniq, it might be risky playing entire IDM sets unless its a dedicated night. Best bet is to just use the odd bit that is appropriate- for example, I frequently use CTD at Rock nights or Windowlicker at more hip hop oriented ones. If you're in some really cheesy house club, take the piss by playing some DMX Krew. A longish Boards of Canada track either right at the end or right at the start of the night. Emptiness by the Caretaker is the unltimate "Fuck off, it's time to go home..." track when the light s ocme up and barstaff are starting to sweep up.

i just thought i would say a couple of things cos i felt like it :)
i can scratch with my left hand but cant with my right, i will have to practise more when i get back.
we recently did our first night about a month ago and i played a set with all sorts of music, old acid, mc pitman, cj bolland, aphex, bomb 20, squarepusher. i try and keep it as varied as possible, just to keep it interesting for the people listening more than me.
also as we know it is hard to mix some of the more mental stuff, so i just try and fit it together like a jigsaw and make it flow rather than make it sound seamless.
but i have just learned by my own ways and plenty of practising, never really read any books or anything like that.
if you wanna see me and a couple other friends and you live in or around stoke on trent. we are playing at the student union at the university on may 7th.
good luck!

Good luck at your next gig Nekta, my only booked one at the moment is in August (ages away), and I'll have to make some concessions in what I play, but they're paying me enough to make it "worth my while" }:D
If you're "mixing" mental stuff like noisier ATR and Snares or Jansky Noise, I find very fast crossfader flicking goes down well.
