Toronto Sars Outbreak

"Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) has killed 15
people in the city - the entire death toll for Canada.

But Mr Lastman, the mayor, insisted the outbreak of the
deadly virus was under control and the medical evidence did
not support a travel ban. "

This being the urgent matter this is, I have asked AMinal,
to skip school tomorrow (as he lives in Toronto) and to go
on an mission for us. I have supplied him with the
following:-

* Map detailing the best route for him to stop and do
intervals.

* Packed lunch (best he doesn't buy anything)

* tape recorder, to record interviews

* notepad / pencils / crayons

* cloth for putting over face, when talking to people

* 50% off voucher for the CN Tower

AMinal is gonna give us a full report tommorow.....if
he........errrrrrrrr when he gets back. Watch this space...

Let me tell you something. I can WHO can verify these
facts.

36,000 people DIED of the flu in the U.S. last year.

250,000 to 500,000 people die from the flu worldwide EVERY
YEAR.

The survival rate of SARS victims is upwards of 90%. Only
those who are immuno-compromised are of substantial risk.

The media has blown this far out of proportion. THe virus
causes pneumonia. There are very effective treatments for
pneumonia. A number of deaths from these contagious
diseases are results of drug related toxicity, side-effects
or reactions.

SARS is nowhere NEAR as contagious as a cold or a flu. It's
simply a NEW virus, not the end of the world. In comparison
to many viruses in fact, it's VERY tame.

Don't listen to the media, they thrive on paranoia.

At the very worst, I think it would be as deadly as the flu.
They have identified the virus as a newly mutated
"coronavirus" that until recently was found only in other
mammals.

Having identified the virus, it remains very possible that a
vaccine could be produced within 2 years.

In addition, the antibodies produced in
survivors could be utilized as an effective treatment. It
was done with Ebola with reasonable success.

I'm work in the Health industry - it's part of my job to
keep up to date. I've been checking Health Canada and the
WHO every couple of days.
The facts indicate that it's not nearly as bad as people are
assuming.

Well ofcourse it's not good. But there were a lot of
recoveries from it.

No - death is not good (depending on your views).

But, considering the nature of the beast, it's getting more
coverage than Iraq, and should be on page 12 instead of the
front.

Researchers are convinced that the west nile virus will get
worse, and surpass the lethality of SARS.

Am I worried about SARS? No - I'm 24, I'm in good health.
I get sick, I get better, my body is stronger as a result -
end. I don't wear a mask, I ride the subway, and I wash my
hands as much as always.

o well it was only the old cunts with no families and the
little weak orrphans that died, no rreal loss.

It's exactly the same situation with the flu. I'm not
downplaying SARS, or the high risk groups.

I would like to emphasize that the common flu kills hundreds
of thousands every year.

To this date 263 deaths have resulted WORLDWIDE. 4439 cases
have contracted the virus. 5.9% mortality rate. The
recovery period is rather lengthly, but the prognosis is
really good.

Personally, I don't think Torontonians should be upset
(myself included). If this travel advisory saves lives, I
support its implementation. Lives first, economy second.

"Lives first, economy second"

Exactly, one life to someone somewherre means the worrld to
them, a life is a past and a futurre even if its "only" 263
deaths.

offline catharsis from Toronto (Canada) on 2003-04-24 12:35 [#00666850]

Uhh.....yes I know. The point I am trying to empahsize is
that when the flu is killing thousands of people, nobody
even flinches. Then SARS emerges, kills a small fraction of
what the flu succeeds in doing EVERY year, and we have full
blown paranoia and an orgy of media stories.

I'm just making a comparison. I'm not suggesting that 263
deaths are acceptable. I'm suggesting that our focus is
misguided by the mind-bending power of our favourite friend
- the television.

it takes hold, we should not.

I agree that a Toronto travel advisory should be
implemented. The only ones who don't agree are the money
hungry ones who rely on tourism and travel.

I also think that those placed on quarantine should adhere
to their restrictions. It's the idiots who are supposed to
be under quarantine that are hanging out at the malls that
pose a great risk to other's safety. I think voluntary
quarantine should now be mandatory and enforced to the
fullest extent of the law. Motherf.... it really pisses
me off.

I'm sure AMinal will be perfectly fine....he's quite
resourceful for a Canadian!
