Another controversial discussion topic for you all...
Chart music for example.....many of you here think its shit right? But the fact that they are successfull from doing what they do, does that make them bad? Or are they just managed properly?
They can obviously sing, but the fact that some do not produce, create or write their songs, is that also bad?
Discuss.........

Hehehehe...I've had this discussion with you before... :)
Most of it I don't regard very artistic. Producers and songwriters know exactly how to make a song that sells well. It's not about the feeling behond the music anymore, it's a mere formula, as someone on the other topic mentioned. Sure, artists can be TECHNICALLY good, meaning they have a good voice or can play an instrument well, but they usually haven't composed the track themself, so as an artist they aren't very good, only as performers.
I compare most commercial music (I am willing to make exceptions though) with junkfood and artistic music (doesn't necessarily have to be IDM/electronic) with vegetables. One is yummy but made quickly and unhealthy and the other is usually icky in the beginning, but you learn to love it and it's better for your health.
Hoped that made sense....

Commercial success, for the most part, has nothing to do with talent, it is to do with the marketing budget. What all forms of music require is exposure to their target market. In the modern music business this is normally through media campaignes, direct marketing costing 10 times more than the average small label would make in 10 years often helps a lot =)
The other two channels leading to chart success are having your track played in a "tendy" commercial, or the general release of tracks that have been played heavily in the Med during the summer to remind everyone how good time they had.

It's cynical as fuck, if you know not to take it seriously, you see it for what it is, melodramatic and exploitative. It's like watching adverts with the sound off or listening without watching- you see them for what they are, sexual innuendo. When you listen to pop music knowing that it is made for the main record buyers (12 year old girls and their parents...) you see how they're made.
I know the idea of the clean cut, handsome, yet non-threatening boyband member is a cliche, but sadly one that rings true all too often.
Still, can't complain. Windowlicker got to number 13 in the UK and The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Massive Attack and Faithless have all enjoyed chart success, so I suppose there is some justice in the world.

Can they 'obviously sing'? My impression is that 90% of mainstream chart music acts lip sync -- even to the point of miming through an entire "live" show. Besides, technology can make any gruff-voiced shister sound half decent.
Chart music is predominaely aimed these days at the pre-teen market -- hardly a demographic acknowledged for it's cultural prowess. At that age they're more concerned with appearances than content. Hence the abundance of "beautiful" people in boy/girl bands. Can't imagine many teen girls with posters of Shane McGowan or Robert Wyatt on their walls!
Nope. The charts and the majority of acts that feature in them are a cynical attempt to profit from the natural, raging hormoanal instincts of the target market.

Yes...but Warp did a major marketing drive for Windowlicker, plus MTV liked the video. The Prodigy got themselves known by making a cheesy rave song using an advert...faithless was an Ibiza tune that got chart success and it led from there. The Chemical Brothers have done a few shrewd moves, with the Block Rockin beats video and the Noel Gallagher comeo (not to mention their ties with The Prodigy)
If you know how to work the media you will be successful.

What exactly is the link with Prodigy & Chems? I know they used to collaborate occasionally back when the Chems were the Dust Brothers...
Sadly all the things you've pointed out are true, no matter how good the music is ;(

Well the Chems did a few remixes for the Prodigy, plus back in the day Keith and Leeroy used to dance at some of the Chemical Brother live performances, which was pretty fuckin cool :)

"They can obviously sing"
thats one of the problems with chart music... all the singers sound the same! All boy bands sing the same and girl bands too, there is no individuality to their voices.... it's almost like their voices are, i dont now.... artificial? clones?
I'd much rather listen to people like Robert Smith, Dave Gahan, Bob Dylan, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Bjork etc etc

for me, what makes a good voice is individuality... clones, or pop singers however perfect their singing may be its bad to my ears.
don't get me started on the music!
