Okay, I went to a pop punk concert with this girl weekend before last and I realized that I am no longer an elitist and I find myself genuinely enjoying very poppy and/or un-indie, un-electronic stuff. Don't get me wrong, IDM still is the superior form and I have no intentioning of sacrificing that.. but I find myslef wanting to listen to Third Eye Blind and Weezer and Good Charlotte and Dashboard Confessional too. This is not to even mention pop trance and 80 pop that I also obsess over. Anyone else have similar experiences? Can this be allowed in such a largely exclusive scene?

Nothing wrong with pop music per se. Like every form of music... there's the good, and there's the bad... and which is which depends on you, but really it depends on me, because I'm God.

no reason to feel ashamed.
it's healthier to be open minded anyway.
i'll admit i have quite a bit of respect for Avril Lavigne. she's totally herself and is impervious to media brainwashers.

perhaps it's possible for even the most acclaimed artists to have a high personal admiration for music that's more difficult to access.

I don't give a shit I try to enjoy all types of music
so far I still can't get into country and I don't like the idea behind r&b (and to a lesser extent gangsta rap), but most of it is pretty good.
Just remember there are electronic music producers behind all the pop hits.
well...most of them.

You enjoyed it. That's all that counts.
I don't listen to music to be cool. I listen to music because I am cool.

"80 pop"
not the cheesy stuff i hope :)
there were tonnes of good artists in the 80's that were popular and creative at the same time like the Cure, Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins etc. Some of my fave bands are from the 80's.

Yay! I'm glad to hear these overwhelmingly encouraging comments. Yes, me and my cousin lately have been listening to whatever the heck we want, .. sometimes even as bad as Britney, Spice Girls, etc. Even Avril we turn up everytime it's on in the car. It's just a necessity. I do have guidelines: like some of you, I refuse to listen to swing, country, r&b, adult contemporary, etc. However, there is alot that I now admit to enjoying that I wouldn't think of a year or two ago.
pantalaimon: As for the 80's music, I mean the cheesy and non-cheesy alike.. I have CDs of each of the bands you mentioned and love them, as well as some not-so-hip. I love 80's radio hits too. I've been specifically enjoying John Waite, Dead or Alive, and lots of other cheesy garbage too. By the way, the Dead or Alive CD 'Rip it Up' is immaculate :).

well it's not like she wrote her music so you can't really judge her on that. however, she is an annoying little bitch in every interview i have read (why i bother i don't know..), and she looks disgusting.

Who cares if it's popular, I'll listen to anything.
Though... there's not that many mainstream acts I like, but it's got nothing to do with being an elitist prick.
What we need is a superband like The Beatles to come along and dominate the charts while setting the standards for yummy creative goodness. That will never happen though.

music exists only in as much as you experience it, which means that you interact with it, you actually contribute to it. we should all applaud uviol's resolution to be free of such foolish elitism. after all, there is so much great music that is not electronic.

No matter how pop something is, I will listen to it as long as the artist has made their own music.
Pop music that is created by two guys in a studio, and sold for an album, I simply can not handle (Celine Dion........etc)

i don't feel guilty about it, but whenever i see pictures of the dave matthews band and how ridiculous they look i can hardly believe i listen to them. not so much into the older stuff, but the last couple albums have proved dave to be an absolute master song writer. and those guys can jam out into bliss every single song for a 200 minute set. i actually forked out $47 for a show this summer.
