This is a rough cut of my new track, "Silo".
Please listen and comment as I'm working on a slightly
different version for my demo CD and would appreciate any
feedback on it.

Many thanks.
Ceri.

I like it. It's nice and mellow.

My only comment is that there is that sound effect that
appears at about 2:02 and it fades in and stops.... my
problem is that it feels like it stops quite abruptly and it
drew my attention to it. After listening through a couple of
times i noticed the same effect happening to me.

Maybe that's what you were going for.... like an attention
getter of sorts to contrast the mellow ambience of things.
:)

I liked it over all. Kinda soothing!

Cheers for the comments- that sound effect does stop too
abruptly and it's not intentional... that's the first thing
I'm trying to fix in the more polished version I'm going to
use on my demo CD :)

Too short man, I like it but it left me kind of wanting
more, I can tell you're dying to make it vletrmx21 :D

I've been getting paranoid lately that I've been making
tracks to long for the amount of variation in them and
people get bored half way through so I forced myself to keep
this one short. Glad you liked it enough to want more
though! The other version I'm working on is about 30 secs-1
minute longer, is that enough?

Cheers Teapot, I thought you'd like it... I just realised
the radio crackle on it sounds a bit like old xanpha stuff-
not an intentional copy, honest!

don't think quantity, think quality :P
if you can hear it through without getting bored or feeling
that something is missing, you have achieved your goal.
just use your ears.

Points: 4537 Status: Regular

oh btw, i liked the track.
but one thing occured to me, would be nice if you used some
automation on the strings to make them more 'organic', maybe
make them evolve and get stronger and stronger like on
vletrmx21.

offline cx from Norway on 2003-04-13 13:17 [#00648371]
Points: 4537 Status: Regular

and heh, put some more reverb on them to add atmosphere.
all in all i like the tune, the strings just need a little
bit more warmth. :)

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2003-04-13 13:19 [#00648374]
Points: 18042 Status: Lurker

It's nice. What it might could need is a steady pulse, some
straight bass notes giving it some spine and direction at a
tempo of about 60. Just some straight quarter notes.

Points: 23533 Status: Moderator | Followup to cx: #00648370 | Show recordbag

Cheers, the strings are the only element that lack
automation :)

I'd thought to add more variety to the patterns, but not to
alter the volume (perhaps I should add another "part" one
octave lower for a more orchestral sound?)

Everyone seems to associate this track with vltrmx21- I'm
flattered! :D

Thanks for listening Fleetmouse. I've been playing around
with basslines (for another track entirely) this weekend so
I think I may try something like them on it. Good idea.

offline Q4Z2X on 2003-04-13 13:26 [#00648383]

nice,
when i listen to this i picture being at a beach with some
type of a choir/horns playing in the background, and what
sounds like static-y waves crashing but then stopping
abruptly like a radio blaring white noise from a random
station while having the volume knob constantly adjusted,
then followed by a few passing helicopters. i think the
track is a good length--it keeps you interested throughout
the length of the song, but doesn't overstay it's welcome.
good work.

Nice dark track, good stuff. I'd perhaps recommend adding
something at either end of the frequency spectrum though -
perhaps some occasional rumble or bass swell, and some
distant hf twinkling. That'd really top it off I reckon.
Nice one.

it also sounds like someone's blowing a slide whistle in the
distance occasionally.

You have sharp ears indeed Q4Z2X! Not only did you spot it
was meant to be a helicopter flying over head, but you also
heard the distant sounds. Great considering it's a 128kb MP3
:)

Chris: Funny you should mention "dark"... I'm toying with
the idea of doing this as part one of 4- this would be the
nightime one, the other ones themed around dawn, day and
twilight. 4 part track, each movement about 2 mins.

Thanks for the frequency comment I'll make a note of that.

It fills my heart with an unspeakable sadness. I have no
idea if you intended it that way, but i find the track very
sad and almost depressing. I actually also immediately
pictured a beach whilst listening to this.

And when i say "sad" and "depressing", i do mean that in a
good way ;-) I find some of favourite songs to be sad and
depressing, so it's actually more like a compliment.

I liked it! I think the length is about right. It leaves you
wanting more... which is so much better than tracks
that go on for too long.

is it an actual helicopter sample, or something else with a
choppy tremolo added to get the same effect?

You picked up on the beach thing too :) My initial idea was
of a grain silo (lots of my music is based on
architecture...) in the desert, but I kept on mentally
jumping to the silos on the docks in my home town. The
staticy bit is meant to sound a bit like sand blowing
around, perhaps from the downdraft of the helicopters
hovering overhead? A water intake building (out at sea, but
reachable at a low tide) ended up being the main inspiration
for the track.

It is meant to be a bit sad and ominous, part of it being
suggestive of the night I suppose...

Thanks for the feedback!

Q4Z2X: It's a synth patch of my own creating, no FX or
anything...

Hey Ceri, good stuff man, the pads in it are really nice.
The LFO effect on the synth bass line is nice. And there is
some really nice crackly sound in thier that remind me of
the begining of Gyroscope

good stuff man, looking forward to hearing more :)

Sorry to bump this again, but some people mentioned that
they didn't use soulseek and didn't want to have to register
to DL from MP3.com. So, for those individuals, you can
download it ("Silo") from here.

Cheers, I'm a big fan of Steve Reich (I tried to copy his
style of piano work in my remix of David Bowie's UK heir for
Teapot's latest compilation). I took that picture up in the
mountains not too far from where I go to university.

You know you've really achieved something with a track when
it makes you (or someone else who listens to it) feel
something.
