ok here's the situation:

any website that uses a shockwave application makes my
computer reboot without even displaying an error message.

for example: www.boardsofcanada.com

as soon as it loads the shockwave applet *ZAP* black screen,
puter reboots.

i uninstalled shockwave, reinstalled. no luck. i have the
latest IE. i tried netscape.
my computer is running fine otherwise (amd duron 800mhz,
256mb ram, windows XP, all security updates and whatnot are
constantly installed, registry cleaned, discs checked).

i do not get a response from shockwave tech support.

does anybody have a clue?

If it's crashing your system, probably there is a video or
sound driver problem that only manifests when Shockwave
loads... try updating the video and sound card drivers.

Do you do any gaming? The problem might also show up there -
basically anything that gives your multimedia capabilities a
good workout.

Try running dxdiag - it's probably in c:\program
files\directx\setup. It might give you a clue as to what's
happening...

If that happened to me, my only solution would be to buy a
new damn computer.

oh shit! they will not be able to help you, it seems to be a
rather specific problem of the software you use. most
likely they will tell you to reinstall everything

update the drivers for your hardware, as fleetmouse said

Make note what .dlls and .vxds they use, then uninstall the
drivers, then boot to a command line and make sure the files
are gone. Then reinstall from your CDs or from files
downloaded from the manufacturers. That should replace any
damaged / missing driver files.

Failing that, maybe it's time to look at what's sharing
interrupts with your sound and video cards. Sometimes the
vid card and network card will get the same IRQ which can
lead to weirdness and crashes.
