i mean. when you make songs, you always make it perfectly
for yourself, or do you sometimes make some tunes for a more
listeners. i mean i have made a few songs yet, and i don't
really like them so much. but some of my friends like it...

im no perfectionist, but when i like what im doing ill
record it.

and it looks like this
www.mp3.com.au/latenights/

i dont make music to please. i dont think thats best, it
stagnates the process of experimenting. but yknow i think
that if i like where im at then someone else will

I make stuff like and don't really care if other people like
it or not. Some stuff I've made in the past I don't like
anymore though.

I like about 10% of my tracks a month after making them

I make stuff I like.
Sometimes I do not like my own productions though... But I'd
never begin with something "to please others", unless it's a
collaboration =)

I can't spent hours on something I don't like. What's inside
comes out in the music you make. It's fun & good therapy and
if some others happen to like it, the better. ;)

on my HD

Sometimes I do not like my own productions though

= how they turn out when they're done...

Sometimes I then remix them, other times
I just lost the feeling I had from the begining or got
carried away in the wrong direction and can't find my way
back, and then I might just aswell start on a new track....
that's how it is for me.

occassionally still like them when im finished

my songs rule! Cept i cant master them for shit. Doh. And
the ammount of copyright infringements is pretty much
through the roof, but who's caring?

key_secret: that's exactly how it is for me too. Like you
said there are so many directions u can go with the track
that it makes my brain hurt. i'm too much of an
perfectionist, i get too many ideas and don't know which is
the right one to go along with

So true. You could fill 2 albums with just one track. :).
And if you made your descision witch way to go, you're still
doubting going along with it. :)
I also spent way to much time one one soundbit and in the
end it always comes close to what I got in the beginning.
:)
It's all a learning process I guess.

i wouldnt make them if i didnt like them, but i have spent
months on certain tracks just cos i cant get that right
sound to it. pisses me off a bit. people like them but as
long as i like them then thats cool.

I make them for my own enjoyment anyway, what good is your
music if you can't enjoy it in your car.

course, can't tell anyone in the car it's you, or, maybe
only play it when you're alone :)

i think if you don't like your music it's cause yer not
making something true to yourself... you're probly just
ripping off afx and vsnares

I like the stuff I do while making them , but after 10 days
or so I'm incredibly ashamed of it, even if my friends like
it...

I need to improve alot...

the stuff I make is what I like to hear.

some tracks I'll like over a longer period of time, others I
like but are not great etc.

just like other people's music.

this is what makes them good - they do what they want to do.

It's difficult to rate your own stuff. You know every bit of
it so you can't listen to it with a fresh ear.

Yeah Kill I know what you mean. Especially when I write
polyrhythms. I know the structure of the song, I know what
to expect and how the song melds together, but I have to
wonder if other people do as well when they listen.

Of course I do! If I dislike a track or think it's pointless
I just delete it and start a new one.

The reason I began making stuff in the first place was to
fill a void that I wanted filled.. to make a type of stuff
that I could pop into my player and enjoy listening to .. in
the process it bacame a much mreo involved process than I
originally intended though. :(

kind of a related topic...

i do, i realized after a while that i make music for myself
and just hope people like it too...

i'm about to upload a few new tracks, actually, a soon as i
get them from the four track to the computer

it would be interesting for people to say 'i make my music
for OTHERS', because how can you really know someone else?
maybe if you make songs through your perspective of OTHERS -
then that in itself would still be a bias, no?

offline jenf from Toronto (Canada) on 2003-04-05 12:55 [#00633893]

of course, i should add that i'm responding to the subtopic
of 'am i making songs for myself or for others' rather than
the initial topic of 'do i like the music i make' ...

nice question, I was just discussing with a musical m8 of
mine, that when I make music it rarely feels like it's
really "my kind of music" the way other artists can achieve
that. Somehow I'm only sporadically able to create exactly
my own musical flavor, so yes I guess I like some of my own
music
