Ways to Enjoy Music.

The other day I was sitting down, chilling out with
friends, listening to music same as always,. when I noticed
something rather peculiar, we were all moving around with
the music, however I was moving at twice the pace of
everyone else, which I thought was strange, (although, the
music was rather slow: Death in Vegas - Opium Shuffle), then
I noticed that I was also moving along with the melodies
when they started to become interesting, and everyone else
was still bopping along at the same old pace.

my friends seemed to be getting as much enjoyment out of the
music as I was, however they were getting it in a different
way, they seemed to be getting off on the general 'vibe' of
the music, whereas, I was running through the song at a
hundred mile an hour in my head scouring the music for every
single detail and intricacy that the song had to offer, and
I was thinking that my attitude towards music may been
changed by all the faster paced, and heavily melodic IDM I
listen to.

Later we were listening to some tool, everyone was sitting
at their computers doing their own thing, the music was
rather loud at this point, and I noticed that everyone
including myself was singing along, just loud enough so that
it couldn't be heard over the music, and I realised that I
was enjoying the music in a different way to before, instead
of wallowing in the 'vibe' of the song or listening to the
details, I was trying to trying to connect with the music
through the lyrics and singing.

I'd found 3 different ways of enjoying music

* the 'Aesthetics' or 'vibe'
* listening for the details, like the snare rush that make
your head wanna pop
* connecting with the music through singing

how do you enjoy your music?

do you think maybe that's another way to enjoy music, to
listen, and add things with your head? maybe musicians enjoy
music more this way,

does anyone think they enjoy music in a way that isn't
already listed

I listen out for mood,emotion.
I try and capture what the artist was thinking when making
the track.

When I listen to music that helps me sleep (boc, four tet
etc.) I close my eyes and imagine that I made the music and
am playing it live to a massive audience :P lol, we're
allowed to dream...

I usually try to assign a visual to every sound i hear and
watch the pattern unfold in my head... works especially well
with Autechre

When I'm driving in my car-car, I sing really loudly, unless
I pull up to a light or stop sign, because then people would
see me belting out the tunes and I'd be embarrased.

when I was delivering pizza's I used to sing out loud, the
only problem was that I'd be listening to it with headphones
on my minidisc, so people would hear me singing out loud but
would hear no music, I got a few weird looks at traffic
lights and such.

This sounds really weird...

But I see music.

I can't explain it, except my mind has its own way of
interpreting patterns of songs, like patterns that form the
various parts at the beginning of the song...

I dunno, it's just really strange, lol, I suck at explaining
it.

same here, and i actually WRITE music like a visual
blueprint... so i totally get where you're coming from.

Hmm..let's see...Nannou for example.

It's pattern at the beginning: Well it has lots of these ' '
' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' ' (those represent the winding sounds)
and underneath are rounder shapes that make up the music-box
bit starting up.

It's so bizarre!

i read you... mine are a bit more advanced sounding than
those, but it's probably hard to describe.
