disappointing donnie darko.

I heard all these rave reviews of donnie darko and was
really looking forward to watching it. Rented it last night,
expecting to be blown away by a ground breaking film. What I
saw was a very average film that mixes catcher in the rye
with back to the future. People refer to it as being a
complex film. I don't understand why. marty mcfly's
adventures had more twists in them than this arthouse piece
of shit. I knew i should have rented one hour photo.

It was a grower for me...wasn't that sure first time
through...

but I really like it now...(and can't stop playing that
version of Mad World by Gary Jules(??).. on the
soundtrack...)...

I don't really think of it as an "Arthouse movie"...it's not
that complex or groundbreaking but it does take chances,
isn;t all sweetness & light and has just about the right
level of ambigeiouty to work for me...YMMV as always..

Not as good as PI...but nothing ever is..:)..

DD is better than One Hour Photo, definitely. So maybe you
should avoid that.

I can;t recall the last time I rented a movie...I download
everything now and if I like it enough, I get the DVD (and
devour the extras...I sooooo adore dir comment tracks and
all that..)...

(On this 2mbs line, it only takes an hour to dl a gig DVD
rip...so it's basically Video on Demand...sorry!!! I know
should stop mentioning it but it's so cool expeiencing just
a little taste of what our future will be like...)...

It can't be as bad as One Hour Photo.

I do pretty much the same, although generally I buy the dvds
I know are great films as well as having lots of extras (I'm
a commentary fiend too) and I download the stuff which
either has fuck all on the extras front or which had average
reviews.

Speaking of 'Catcher In The Rye', I always forget to pick it
up when I'm getting books... any good?

It's on Front Row now, and I was curious about it. My mates
saw me looking at it, one said "That's a fantasic film" and
the other one said "It was utter, utter, shit" so I think I
need to find out for myself.

"brotherhood of the wolf" is utter utter crapiness of la
order maxi-mum. Take Dangerous Laiasons, lash in some The
Howling, sprinkle with Crouching Tiger and you get a big
dose of french, overlong bullshit. Nice costumes, set
though.. but, for some reason, i like a good story!

so you are the one who is going to kill the president by
government mind control triggered by subliminal messages or
high frequency beams aimed at your brain implant?

btw, idd DD is a pretentious + very average movie

Tears for Fears version of Mad World is a super dank song.

DD has a great soundtrack

hehehhe

what happened is this.......TOO MUCH BUILD-UP!

a movie never lives up to it's reputation when it's talked
about ad nausem on this MB.

i for one am glad i didn't read/hear about it on here cos
otherwise it woulda been ruined for me.

it was an original and interesting flick, not oscar worthy
(T hee) but still enjoyable.

again......endless hype only leads to disappointment, no
matter how good something is.......IMO =0)

agree bill

I don't find myself saying that too much, but DD is an
underground film that people like to rave about.

people forget, some films are underground for a reason.

I disagree with you all it would seem.
Donnie Darko is my favourite movie ever. I had no
expectations when I saw it and I found the characters had
certain subtelties whoich I could relate too myslef. Plus it
made me feel strange for a while

If nobody talked about it so much and tried to look into it,
it would have been one of my favorites. When I first
watched, I really liked it, but then people started quoting
it way too much and trying to dissect it...It wasn't a movie
to make you think, even if it tried to be, it just a nice,
decent film.

it felt to me like they were trying to emulate some of the
"David Lynch" mood and take it further, hmm kinda lost my
interest by the end...

i actually agree with bill_hicks on this,
i saw it only just yet ('cause it was supposed to be a
"great movie") and man what a huge disappointment it was.
i kept on waiting for the moment it'd get more interesting,
but it didn't. it sucked
as Dael sais, it looks like they wanted to make a David
Lynch style kinda movie a little,
now i do like Lynch's movies, but DD sucked,
it's not automatically cool when it's vague and absurd, at
least Lynch also has great atmosphere/mood and tension as
ingredients for his flicks

before i saw it i even thought of buying the DD dvd since
everybody thought it was great anyway,
am i glad i can just delete the avi file now

i get a little bored of reading threads where people feel
let down by an album/song/film.
don't you see that getting sucked into 'underground' hype +
word-of-mouth hysteria is exactly the same as fawning over
whatever the tabloids + the tv promote? considering the
number of 'anti-mainstream' sentiments i see expressed here
im surprised at how often people seem to be dismayed that
something hasn't lived up to its (often exaggerated)
reputation.

simple rule of thumb - don't believe the hype.. wherever it
comes from. try + approach things with an open mind. chances
are, whatever it is/whoever produced it/whatever anyone says
about it, it's not going to be the second coming.
make up your own minds + dont let anyone shape your
expectations for you. there are no garuantees.. we're all
different + we all have different tastes.

for the record - i really enjoyed donnie darko.

of course i do

but why is it so hard to accept that DD was a disappointment
for some people, i for one really think only the quality of
the film itself was responsible for it, not the hype or the
promotion.
btw i for instance read loads of reviews that praised kill
bill and said it was a great flick, i went to see it with
high expectations and indeed i loved it,
strange huh

i think its good. my wife didn't like it though. i mostly
appreciate it's asthetic qualities, music, photography and
how appropriate they are to the subject matter. but yeah, i
agree that some people excessively cream over it. it looks
like the hype ruined it for you. I was aware of the hype,
but i strive for objectivity when watching a film,
attempthing to separate myself from the hype. I know what i
like. i like donnie darko.

I think it's okay.

problem for me with Donnie Darko is that it's more like a
case-study of a made-up theory - which is fun maybe, but
kind of unaccessible to me (emotionally, I mean) and it's
not like the theory is that interesting - in other words, it
could've been any theory really.

i can see that. i think for a movie with a "gimmik" it
could have been flushed out a little better rather than made
intentionally confusing. it is, however, an interesting,
original (i think) way to examine time travel in film.

a better "case study with a made up theory" is Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless mind.

It takes it's little gimmik theories and thoroughly examines
all aspects of them using different characters, before,
during, after kind of thing. It's much more complete. i
think.

looking forward to seeing it.

Kaufman at least choses theories that have an emotional
effect on his characters - in other words, they have to live
with the consequences.
