Is music less geeky than videogames?

Just a strange phenomenon I've noticed...
Personally, I think music equipment/software is more "geeky"
than videogames (esp. console games). They're a lot more
technical, require more practice etc.

However, girls seem very interested by my record decks, but
not my dreamcast and GBA. Strange.

Nah, video games are more geeky. Mere technicality doesn't
consitute geekiness.

That's true actually- quite a few girls I know who knock me
playing DC/PS2 etc. are oten up for a blast on Mario on the
NES or GB Tetris.

Tibbar- Yes, I've often thought at gaming championships
people should take cheerleaders :)

Girls are usually more creative than guys so I think that
music is considered less geeky than video games because
girls appreciate creativity...even though you might have a
shitload of music hardware.

Yeah, music is creating something, being sensitive. even if
its about some technical stuff, you acheive something
higher, and girls generally like that. Creative people seem
more interesting for the opposite sex (exploit it!).
Whereas, games are simply a waste of time in my oppinion.

i don't think so. i think that adults who play computerr
games is prretty geeky.

i just can't underrstand how they still get pleasurre frrom
them.

i don't think you have to be really inteligent to play a
computer game. the developers try to make now some easy
stuff everyone can win. music making is a gift. not
everybody can make it. i think this makes it impressive.
when i invite a girl to me the first look is on my
turntables :)

on the geeky quotient, games score 4, music scores 2, nhs
specs score 8, and having an elastic band around your
lunchbox scores 10

Yeah I would have to say in my opinion that VIDEOGAMES are
considered MUCH GEEKIER with my friends that are girls...I
remember before my house was robbed a long time ago, I had
turntables and like CERI said, people were always much more
fascinated with my guitars, congas, turntables....etc..

BUt I LOVE VIDEOGAMES:)

adults who play video games are not necessarily geeks
though. take me, for instance.
i know what is being said with the opposite sex angle, the
more creativity involved = less geeky, cuz you are creating
an end product, not just consuming like with videogames

listening to anything but mainstream music is geeky,

music nerds aren't as geeky as videogame nerds though...

but music nerds are usually more outwardly strange,
especially the musicians

I would say games are more geeky
coz I mean EVERYONE listens to music, but not everyone plays
games actively.

I don't think that most people listen to music "actively",..
sure they listen to forcefeed radio but they don't really
actively get into music, they just let it take up the
silence

well ive never seen any equipment so I dont know how my
reaction would be, but youre the guy and most of you say the
same things are your equipment, so I'll take your word for
it.

At least you know the girl for you is the one who runs
straight to your dreamcast and ask to hear some of your
music =)

Well yeah I suppose
but like, I think ppl pay more attention to music than
games, like they know if they like rap or hiphop or
electronic or dnb or something.

And when people I know find out I make music they're always
like "cool!".

I make video games, (not professionally yet, but I've done
some pretty advanced stuff) and people are pretty impressed
with that, more impressed than with my music (although my
music is really bizarre). Creating video games requires a
lot of creativity. Warren Spector came to U of M and talked
about shared authorship where the player is actually taking
an active part in the video game. So, I disagree with
people's earlier statements about video games not requiring
creativity.
