don't be a spazmo - AFX isn't always drill'n'bass, but if
someone didn't like drill'n'bass you would say "listen to
aphex twin then!" so they would hear some quality! all the
DJ KRUSH i've ever heard (i have 4CDs and several mp3s has
been trip hop)

i like (some) trip hop, thought the term seems to be largely
abused - and ambiguous, either that or i only like a small
portion of trip hop!

dj krush is quite nice, though it can get a bit boring ..
splitrmx by autechre i would consider some wicked trip hop
(perhaps more down beat) ?

he's pretty good..a lot of range in his stuff..that's why I
find it hard to tag him..some stuff is almost drill..but
mostly downbeat..illbient..I guess trip hop without vocals
and pop appeal is illbient..am I about right?

so many things get lumped in as trip hop...how can you
compare dj shadow to coldcut? ooh, they both use downtempo
breaks so they've got to be the same...

sounds good, fleamarket! i will check him out! :)

yeah trip hop is becoming too vague b3n, you're right -- but
there are new terms springing up all over the place - i like
the term illbient for instance - i know a lot of people
think of a piano melody over some running water when the
term AMBIENT is used :D

fleamarket..I like that:)

and whatabout Funki Porcini?I love Funki Porcini..it gets
lumped with trip hop..but some of it is IDM..and other
drilly d'n'b...

ILLBiENT, as far i understand it, is dark ambient, with an
edgy suspenseful, terror-filled feel to it -- well probably
the definition is a little more lax than that

Their lataest album 'the magnificent tree' is the best they
have done so far.
(because they have a new singer?)

It is worth checking.

You know, I read the thread title and got kinda pissed, and
went in to rebut, and then noticed that it said "I don't
like trip-hop", not "I don't like Hip-Hop".

Trip-hop may seem boring to you, cause it is boring.

I personnally hate the term Trip hop used to classify music
into a genre. There a very few bands/musicians that i would
classify trip hop. The only person i can think of that fits
trip hop is Beck. Trip hop is like a band with a
singer/emcee, and DJ that doesnt want to be classified as
RAP/HIPHOP, or for songs that are a wierd bpms like 108
bmp.

Ambient - Usually no drums or specific BPM.

Down Tempo - 60-85 BPM. Slow hip hop and certain styles of
house can be classified downtempo.

Hip hop/rap- 85-99 bpm.

House/Trance-120-140 BPM

Drum & Bass/Jungle- 160-180 BMP

Drill & Bass 180-200+ bpm

Experimental- 0-200+ bpm. Using uncoventional sounds.
Doing something with sound that has never been done before
etc.

Dj KRUSH, Dj Shadow- Hip hop

Portishead- downtempo hiphop, organic electronic.

Massive Attack- downtempo, hiphop, electronica.

Radio head- downtempo, electronica.

Funki Porcini- downtempo. Hip hop. Drum&bass, depending on
the track.

genre isnt defined by tempo -- apart from the obvious like
gabba and happy hardcore

but then again labels like ninja tunes go out of their way
blanket labeling everything they have got as trip hop when a
lot of it so obviously isn't..Coldcut for one..and Funki
Porcini..though I did find it surprising that while so many
were singing the IDM virtues of Amon Tobin and Cujo..I found
a lot of it to be nothing more than beefed up trip hop..

oh, and

01) what's between 140&160bpm?
02) why is 108bpm a "weird" tempo?

b/w 140 and 160 is the really cool metallic/minimal/detroit
inspired Techno..the kind I bop around to a lot..the kinda
stuff you get on Tresor and Nova Mute..dare I say
it..Intelligent Techno?

I think some of you are missing the point. The genre is just
so other people know vaguely what you are talking about.
there are no definite boundries 'oh that tracks below 100bpm
and has breaks must be trip hop'
I personally regard shadow as instrumental hip hop, as I do
Nightmares on wax (later stuff) and see trip hop as the more
playful stuff generally like coldcut, but it really doesn't
matter.

and taxidermist...trip hop isn't boring, that's a stupid
thing to say IMO

as far as I can remember, it was mixmag who coined the trip
hop term for describing massive attack's music.

in my opinion it's just another way of saying downtempo hip
hop.

I was being ironic..but I also laid out some fact..I think
the problem with trip hop is that it became too big too
quick got massively overexposed got entagled into the
merciless maw of the flavour of the week..got chewed up spat
out and stripped of any credibility..all a bit sad...because
stuff by the likes of Portishead and Tricky is still kinda
tasty..Massive Attack and Mezzanine killed it for me..and
the Mad Professor guy..he blows..

up being a dump for lots of music people couldn't fit into
other things

right on, that list of definitions is silly because genres
are very loose, overlapping, prone to change and a bit
subjective.

how is this contro-j character? i have 'mighty mouse calls
a bluff' and it's a nice tune.

yep everything that was hip hop but was not about gangs and
hos and had prominent fem vox (back then it was rarer)..with
a laid back jazzy swing to it became trip hop..and I mean
everything..it became the domain of the hacks..

I agree, trying to label music is difficult and the genre
name doesnt mean anything. Its the artist and their track,
if its sounds good who cares how you would classify it.
Just like it.
There are exeptions to everything. It depends, but i
do think tempo has a lot to do with how you classify into a
genre. Name a hip hop beat that isnt within 80-110 bpm ?
Name a Jungle track thats slower than 100 bpm ? Some genres
are defined by tempo and some arent.

I still think the name trip hop is lame.
