I felt so bad after closing that ''Head Cheese'' topic the
other day that I told myself, ''self, why don't you go rent
that classic movie and see for yourself, self''? So I did,
and now I'm about to watch it. Even the ragged old video
looks scary, I loathe to put in the ol' VCR.

Here I go...

Submit your thoughts about the Texas Chainsaw Masscare (1974
version, natch) here.

Leatherface may be a psycho, but he doesn't know the first
thing about making prime cuts in human flesh. He'll never
make it as a gourmet cannibal.

;P

I think it sucks. Maybe I was expecting it to be scary too
much but it never got under my skin even once.

I think it's an ok horrorfilm.
I don't like to mention "could have been"s when I review a
movie so I won't.
Worth watching anyway.

The movie is (very loosely) based on a true story... But the
true story only involved one crazy person; Ed Gein.
There's even a movie based on his murders:

I might aswell add that he did some REALLY insane stuff... I
don't think the murdering is not the issue.
Have not seen the movie, but I've read about the true story.

offline X-tomatic from ze war room on 2003-03-19 18:02 [#00604832]

still it doesn't get any more scary, even knowing that it's
based on a true story.
What I think was really really scary was that show "idols"
and the total mass-hysteria it caused over here.

I think the true story is more scary than the movie...

Yeah, I know all about Ed Gein... nice guy.

Interestingly, one of the actors in this movie was named Ed
Guinn! I just noticed watching the credits.

Man... that was insane. No special effects, grainy amateur
camera, it feels so realistic. Nothing like the horror
movies of today. Just... creepy. You can see where all the
horror movie conventions came from, they're all there, but
without that sense of parody... fucking great film. I need
that soundtrack.

this movie is so dope.. it's like a snuff film, only you
have the comfort of knowing it's fake. ........or is it?

I love the scene where the boys are trying to get pa to kill
the girl with a hammer. I found it quite disturbing but also
arousing at the same time. And i think if you all admit to
yourselves, you did it.

The only bit that got me was when they first venture into
the house and suddenly the masked giant appears and brains
one of the kids. I was totally unprepared and it just 'got'
me. If I were to re-watch it, it wouldn't have this effect.
The rest of the film was just funny. Oh and the meat hooks
were pretty cool. :)

I think its the scariest film ever. It freaked the living
fuck out of me when I first saw it... plus the meat hook bit
gets everyone, even the people trying to laugh.

I've only seen one called "Texas Chainsaw Massacre- The next
generation" set 20 years after the original. Some creepy guy
is orchestrating the whole thing.

Strangley it's not listed on imdb. Anyone know the one I
mean?

heard about it.. think you shouldn't expect something fine,
making sequels is a new national sport, it will be stupid
and too new to fit with the original.

*cowers* This is one classic movie that I wont see! Blood...
doesnt do it for me. :| I dont like the scary movies with
monsters or killers that just kill people randomly... I like
thrillers, I think. But for the most part, I stay away from
horror movies. :|

Ceri--the internet movie database! its not there? *goes to
check*

The only horror movie that scared me while watching it (some
play on your mind in the following nights afte rwatching
them, but I'm not normally scared while watching) was the
Blair Witch 2. Strange as most people slated it.

I think the fact it was actually quite realistic (I'll not
explain why in case people haven't seen it) made it all the
more unsettling.

haha okay. :)

Most popular title searches:

Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The (1974)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (2003)
9 'title' matches (i.e. movies, TV, video etc):

Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (1994)
Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The (1974)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, The (1986)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (1983) (VG)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The (2003)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: A Family Portrait (1988) (V)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Shocking Truth (2000) (V)
Texas Comedy Massacre, The (1987)
Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990)

That is the list Im finding... not finding that exact title
there. Hmm! Is it that 1994 one?

Honestly, I dont know anything about this movie or its
history because things like this scare me. ;)

Sorry I couldnt be of anymore help!

Meathook" which is also loosely based on Ed Gein

This is hands down one of the greatest horror films ever
made. The 16 mm grainy film just adds to the effect that
you are watching a home made film or one of the old
emergency films from grade school. As far as the gore
factor, If you watch closely, there isnt even that much
blood in the film. Part 2 isnt bad, 3 was pretty cool, next
generation kinda sucked but I have high hopes for part 5
coming out later this year. The hot chick from rules of
attraction is in it.

I imagine the super 8 verison would go for a lot... me and a
mate were considering getting a projector etc, but when we
realised how expensive films for it were and how hard to
come by blank tape was we knocked it on the head.

I demand a Super 8 re-issue along with the TR-303, NES
games and pads and HAB 2.

texas chainsaw massacre was not really what the title
promised. it's quite chilling but not really comparable to
other psycho weird flicks.
the 2nd wasn't better really, but more comfortable to watch!
especially the guy with the glowing wires... "dog will
hunt", this was even sampled in primus' "jerry was a race
car driver" :)

i love
- the psycho hitcher brother they pick up
- the wheel chair guy getting it
- the constant screaming at the end
- pa sucking the finger
... great horror moments
