Reich, Glass, Satie, Eno advice please

I'm planning on buying some cd's of Steve Reich, Philips
Glass, Eric Satie and Brian Eno (i know Eno doesn't really
fit in there (some will say: 'Glass neither'), still i want
some of his stuff too...)

so my question is:

Could you recommend one album by each artist, so that i know
which ones to get first?

Thx in advance :)

Brian Eno & Harold Budd - The Pearl

Steve Reich: Get Works (yep that's the 50th anniversary 10
CD Box Set with almost everything he's ever done!) very good
buy! It's my bible!
Otherwise I'd say Music 4 18 musicians is a must. But get
hold hold of the EMI recording not the Nonesuch as it's
supposedly waaaay better.

Get the "Reich Remixed" album- steve reich remixed by
coldcut, freq nasty, dj spooky etc. very accessible. Then
get music for 18 musicians.

Tony: Didn't know about works... can you get that on vinyl?
:D

Get Satie's early piano works, look out for the recording
where the tracks lengths are 2/3s as long as the other one.
The longer one isn't as good.

I'm still not sure what I think of Reich Remixed. I love the
Piano Phase mix though. I'd love to hear some remixes of him
by autechre, aphex, the orb, and the usual crowd... oh well
dream on Tony! Mind you, the orb have used reich material in
their stuff, in fact they were one of the first to do so.

what about eno,
is 'music for airports' a good recommendation?

I can't really get into him at the moment. I'd say 'apollo'
is a safe bet though.

yeah I heard that too. But I was under the impression that
he's not a fan of Mr.R. despite the similarities between
their work. :(

Huge reich fan myself...better leave the Remix record
alone...it´s not worth the money, get the originals. My
personal favorite is eight lines.

Even more interesting is Terry Riley's in C...try and get
a hold of the version on a label called Wergo

Morton Feldman is worth checking out too...it´s more
minimal and a little less energetic, more romantic

what about Glass..?
i have his 'solo piano', it's nice imo
also got Glass' 'songs', it's a compilation of liquid days
and some other stuff if i remember well..

nobody seems to be into Glass ey?

I have that cdboxset as well...awesome. Escpeciallysuprised
by his early tape work like 'it´s going to rain'

Eno's Ambient 4 On Land is a great record. Music for
airports by BOAC is nice as well.

Don't know about Glass, only have a copy of the
photographer...i'm not impressed

Glass has a great ability to extract deep emotion using
minimalism and repetition. I really like his stuff a lot.
Haven't heard 'Music For 18 Musicians' yet, though. I'll
have to check it out.

Reich's tapeworks ("come out to show them", "its gonna
rain") are incredible.

The Works set is great, too.

I'd also recommend "City Life", a piece he made in '96 with
lots of samples and orchestra.

actually, I'm going to a performance of "City Life" in about
an hour. :)

Steve Reich is great!!! Listen to "Electric guitar phase" -
that?s something to play airguitar to!

All phased Reich works are amazing.
Electric counterpoint was sampled by the orb on little
fluffy clouds an on the live version o.o.b.e (says much
about their own abilities as muscians & composers I must
say)

New york counterpoint (played by one member of BOAC) are one
special favorite - when the bass clarinet kicks in it?s
total bliss... Great music.

Reich CDs to get is - all of them! "Triple quartet" "18
musicians" + "Drumming" (the german version is a bit 70?s
noisy - but much longer! + gives you additional tracks!) are
great cds to start with.

"Reich remixed" sux BIG time, really shows how strong Reich
own original music really is.

For Eno I would recommend "Airports" + "Ikebukuro" (From
"the shutov assembly"), Neroli and "On land"...

For Glass - I don?t know really... I only CD I got where he
is involved is donkey rhubarb by aphex, his remix doesn?t
impress me much...

qrter - I envy you.... hoping you will have a great time!

Yeah i envy him too...it's in the Concertgebouw...and i read
about the performance a couple of months ago, but complety
forgot about it...oh well.

there are many satie recordings... of the ones i've heard, i
like Anne Queffelec (< not so sure about the spelling...)
Make sure you get a good recording though...... its hard
choosing cds with 'classical' composers, cos of the
different performers.............................

and if you have a really good hifi avoid remastered classics
like the plague. They always turn out fuzzy and need the
volume up a max just to hear normally.

right! I'm back.

actually, it was at Muziekcentrum Vredenburg here in
Utrecht, HeWhoCannotBeNamed. :)

the Schonberg Ensemble played Reich's "City Life" and
"Triple Quartet" and John Adams's "Gnarly Buttons" and
"Chamber Symphony".

City Life was great, although the samples were a bit soft in
the mix. still, what a great piece.

I thought Triple Quartet was okay, Reich IS very good at
snare instruments.. didn't really float my boat though.

Adams' Gnarly Buttons had one good part and two lesser
parts, even sofar as to be kind of cheesy.

I did really like Chamber Symphony, very funny!

the ensemble was great, they were really having fun playing
this music, which is such a relief after seeing quite a lot
of sour-faced orchestra-members.

worth investigating. I was planning to see a performance of
'18 musicians' in london in may actually.

the last one is the original from the 70's and that's the
only one i've heard...
i like it very much but it requires a certain mood when
listening to it... because it is one 50+ minute long
composoition based on one rhythmic pulse... i can see why
some people don't like it at all.

I've heard they don't always "pull it off" quite to the
standard of the EMI recording- it's obviously quite hard to
play out of phase...

That said, I'd love to check out a performance of it.

Morton: Reich himself is probably playing on both the
nonesuch and the ecm recording, together iwth his own
ensemble, but he?s not playing on the rca release (due to
contract restrictions). I would love to compare them all
three - but right now I only got the rca recording (sounds
ok, horrible cover though, I made my own ; )
