At one time my favorite medium of pointless artistic
expression was drawing. I was able to draw very weird
abstract things using a technique that involved staring at a
blank piece of paper and letting my imagination form
interpretations from the subtle chaotic slightly lighter and
darker areas of natural shade in the paper. I did a bit at a
time, extracting as much as possible that was imaginable at
one spot, then adding to it later with additional
interpretations. Anyhow, I found that the static tv channel
works really well as a similar sort of background, only for
MOVING visuals. There are some AWESOME things in there.
There's super weird simultaneous swirling and lots of crazy
moving stuff.
*goes to stare at some static

Haven't seen the american version of the ring, but there is
a connection (I assume) btw what you just said and the
recording on that tape from the movie.

does anyone remember the link that someone posted a long
time ago with great artsy animation? I think it had a
section called "sunday morning" or something. there was also
some funny muppet porn. that's the sort of stuff you can see
in tv static. I've never tried mushrooms though.

Perhaps they simply payed someone to be on drugs and to tell
them what he/she sees while looking at statics, so they made
a movie like that.

what paper were you using for the drawings ? i think i have
a too small imagination for that. and the static tv, yes,
sometimes i'm really scared bout the things i see in them.

I remember that even before any of the ring movies were
release that I was doing the same. Looking at the TV static
for the purpose of making shapes. The furthest I got was
seeing the ring like thing on a TV due to a way a human eye
focuses.

What are these ring movies? are they out for rent yet? do
you know who makes them or anything?

the ring:
the whole story is about a video cassette. there's a movie
on it, fuckin wierd one, with some burning tree, a woman
jumping from a cliff, all black and white, and there's a
ring shown.
the history of the movie is, that if you have seen the
movie, you have 7 days and you die. the original movie was
japanese, but there was a quite good american adaptation not
long ago.

I'll have to give the paper thingy a go,sounds good.

I thought this post might be about, when you turn your tv
offor on in the dark touch the screen, and you'll see the
blue static, like in those crystal balls.

hobbes, yes but you can actually get to a point where the
chaos gets predictable. Under the influence of drugs you
can get to a point where the static becomes a real picture.
Since the TV has a reflecting surface, the best thing would
be to project the static instead of watching it on a TV.

hobbes, the patterns in a TV static do exist but it depends
whether you will see it as a static or some kind of a movie
that is going on in your head. I think it makes no
difference as long as it is predictable.

By the way, whenever I mentoin something that belongs to
that ring movie, I get a phonecall and nobody is saying
anything or simply hangs up. If there is anyone behind it
(if it is not a coincidence that happened about 5-8 times)
I LOVE YOU!

Agreed. When I first heard that: WTF?!?

Then I kept repeating it. I smiled...game over, man.

I wish Autechre had done more stuff like that...one of a few
minor peeves with them. But just a few and hardly
interfering with my love for their musik.

Ae is, once again, champion of the w00t!

:D

(about the movie)

There is just something weird about making an analogy with a
dog without legs and a man that is crawling in Japanese
version.

I saw The Ring yesterday. It opened here a week or so ago.
It's very disturbing, not just the way they treated and
killed the little girl, but because evil (the girl) wins and
they are forced to spread her madness in order to survive
her. There's a nice spoiler for ya :)

Monumrnt, your caller or the movie caller? The caller in the
movie wasn't very nice.

Jesus the first victim really scared me. You don't get to
see her when she dies, until later at the funeral when they
talk about the "why the closed casket?" and "I saw her
face". At that point you get to see a flash of the 16 yo
girl sitting dead in a closet. This is probably the single
most frightening thing I've ever seen in a movie. The effect
does wear out even during the course of the movie, so I
can't see how they could make sequels in Japan.

I searched for stuff about it before on google too.
http://www.turnoffyourtv.com/static.html

I thought it was pretty crazy when I read it was cooling
photons, not that I much understand it. The link provided on
this site, howstuffworks.com is also great.
