I have many of these programs/addons.. but I am far from
being very knowledgable about them

what does VST stand for?

what functions, other than simply adding effects to tracks
etc. are available through such programs

which programs allow the use of them?

does renoise?

etc etc

oh, and do any of them actually produce new sounds

VST = virtual studio Technology
being able to use instruments and FX in different programs
as plugins

some programs which support these plugins:
Cubase
Fruityloops
Orion
Logic Audio
Muzys
Traction
Renoise
Buzz
and some others as well, some need a DX to VST
adapter(Sonar)

"oh, and do any of them actually produce new sounds"

Instruments

VST changed my life. i've got like a million of them,
effects & instruments. you have endless of possibilities
creating music with with vst and a sequencer that supports
it (i use CUBASE SX)

pHATmatik pro and pHAtfactory (basicly the same) are the
best VSTi plugin out there. It's like recycle but much much
better. the process of making a track is much easier &
faster with this plug-in. phatmatik pro

check out the demo!

- install VST effects and instuments to desired VST path
- open renoise and use the little browser on the top of the
screen to that VST path on you HD
- click on config, then misc
- click on the button that says vst from browser's path (or
something like that)
- wait a while so the program registers the plugins
- after that's done click on instrument and then
vstinstrument to select your desired VSTI or on dsp to
select FX
