Saying sex sells is bullshit
Sex never sold anything to anyone.
People buy sex, not the other way around.
-PT Alcove

Read it nice and slow, I'm inclined to believe him.
thoughts?

this for some reason makes me wonder if sex-phonenumbers
actually would accept a collect call..

well, the saying "sex sells" implies that you can sell
almost anything if you larder it with sex.

so if people buy sex, you can sell things better using sex.

so yes, sex sells.

i'm currently studying graphic design (which includes
advertising) and sex does sell... anyone with half a brain
knows this. Who is PT Alcove?

I think I can paraphrase:

"sex sells is bullshit, you buy sex"

I mean, you buy what you buy, sex can't force you to do
anything. Everyone complains about sex being used to market
things, but that is because people want sex.

Blaming sexuality is pointless then, people buy sex. Not
the other way around.

people buy sex because it is being used to sell, therefore
sex sells :)

The fact that people other than 12 year old girls buy
Britney Speares albums is proof enough.

true but i think i know what blatant means,
more like sex itself can't do anything, it can't do things
like walking, selling etc.

so in that way it's people who are selling and buying sex..

..?

what the hell kind of topic is this anyway???

:P

offline theo himself from +- on 2003-03-07 10:41 [#00584888]

well obviously.. following that rationale NOTHING sells
itself.. which everyone should know.. it shouldnt have to be
explained to pt alcove that these things/concepts/images
don't actually go out and market and sell themselves.. it's
just an expression

sex sells and lesbians equal ratings

you could be right

I just agreed with his rational that seems to say, instead
of blaming sex, and the companies that use it to market,
shouldn't we be looking deeper?

this deeper being that people want sex. it's not being
forced upon them, they are asking for it, so blame the
public for the sex in the media.

where these kids come from is beyond me, quotes just get
passed to me.

> totally agree with you. : )

it feels to me that society has a weird point of view about
sex... on the front, they hide that they like it, people
wear clothes, showing genitalia is considered shocking, it's
close to being "sex is bad" - - whereas on the back, people
seem to seek for it more than anything else sometimes...
maybe even more because it is considered as "bad"...

yes, we all know that, but isn't it a ridiculous situation?

one good example of that is hentai. the censorship in japan
forbids the authors to show any (female?) genitalia, but
they still make the characters do everything apart from
that...

sells.

so, sex DOES sell.

Offcourse it sells. The marketingboys found easily how to
turn on peoples hornymaker. It's sometimes ridiculeus how
sex is integrated in a commercial just to show as half a
tit.

if someone (a) is buying sex and nobody is selling sex then
someone (a) is being silly

sex is good if you want to sell more of anything (britney
was a great example indeed)
but sex itself sells great too
