OK MIDI gurus, do I need anything special to hook up my keyboard to my computer?
I know nothing about MIDI, but I have a MIDI-out on my ancient keyboard and a port on my computer that the manual calls a Game/MIDI port. I don't have a big fancy Soundblaster card, just normal AC97 onboard audio.
I heard that I might need something called a "breakout box", or can I just get the appropriate lead and connect them up?

You want a cable that has a normal round sylte midi in and out connections on one end and the midi on your soundcard type connection on the other end (what you plug joysticks into). No need for a breakout box, it should work just as it is...

That's the one- they can be quite ahrd to find in high street stores though- music stores tell you to go to PC ones and vice versa. Keyboard/synth specialists are the best bet or order online.

Coolio. I shall have to try that if I can find that sort of cable anywhere.

Try Maplin's website (www.maplin.co.uk I think) or do a search for "midi cable game port uk" on google...

I don't see anything at Maplin's, but elsewhere it is quite an expensive cable (£20-25). I'll look in the local shops when I get home.
