Well, yes, why does Tom call himself Squarepusher? Does he like to push squares? And why Autechre? Or Plaid?
I know the background for Aphex, BoC, and Venetian, otherwise, I'm clueless.
I'd like to know about any IDM/Braindance-artist you know. ^^

Tom Jenkinson has said it was just a whim of fancy, he combined "square" and "pusher" together and he liked it, so the stuck with him...no real history behind the name...

I always thought it was a statement about pushing boundaries and thumbing his nose at all the uncool "squares" hanging around him and his music (and there are plenty of those in England ;) ). Hence: "Squarepusher".

There's an interview where aaron funk explained the name Venetian Snares. He found that his snares sounded a lot like running a pencil against some venetian blinds, and had a whimsical idea that his music sort of has venetian snares.

I (yes,me) thought Squarepusher got his name from the old saying 'trying to fit a square peg into a round hole'.(means trying to do something that's impossible) ....thus,Toms idea for his music is descriptive of the original meaning....
ok,am I making sense? No?ok.

actually, a squarewave isnt far off for a bass guitar.
We had to construct a fingered bass sound in modular functions/signal flow 2 weeks ago, and the primary waveform we used was a pulse wave (which is a square wave, but instead of equal durations of "on" "off" one is longer then the other)
if that made any sense. I dont know how to desribe it non visually.

aphex is a company that makes compressors or reverb units or something and RDJ owned one of those units.
i saw a program done by the National Film Board of Canada and i see how BoC extracted their name from it, judging by the music played on the program.
