most of the people here probably groove to his hooks sampled
by hip hop artists without even knowing

yea, perhaps so.

he died in 1997-2000 thereabouts. i think my fave song by
him is "we people who are darker than blue".

true :) but i think his socio-political commentary is really
special too. that's what i was getting at when i said curtis
is even better than marvin gaye, who was also a brilliant
lyricist when it came to talking about society.

yeah I got what you said..but Superfly is also his version
of a subtle soulful social commnetary on what he saw as the
ills of the ghetto life..

I prefer Curtis but I wouldn't say he's better... plus
Marvin gets extra points for being shot by his own father.

pointless fact #38

ex-tears for fears member curt smith named his band mayfield
because, as he says, curt is mayfield. geddit?

but superfly is a bit more fictional than biographical just
due to its nature of being a film soundtrack.. it's great
but it's still very much informed by the movie, as opposed
to mayfield's albums.

Curtis was the man....he just got dealt a couple bad hands,
the paralysis and early death. I mean, c'mon.....a light
fixture fell on top of him at a show, putting him in a
wheelchair. That's tragic in it's own. As long as I am
living, I will always have the back of any Curtis Mayfield
praise. Although the Superfly soundtrack was his least
personal contribution, I think that it was his finest
instrumentally.....VERY PIMPIN'.
I favor Curtis over Marvin anyday....he played
instruments as well as sang.....more rounded as an artist
than Marvin......and I agree, Marvin indeed gets the raised
eyebrow award for his final departure.
