In the early 90's, electronic artists of more creative
ambition and individuality began to grow wary of the of the
quick-press, homogenous, disposable, house and techno
movement and intrinsically, the faceless mobs that were
whimsically defining what would be the future of electronic
music. With the churning out of DJ albums showcasing
nameless artists, techno music was forsaking art for
Industry. In the UK, Ed Handley and Andy Turner, who had
released an album under the name PLAID (Mbuki Mvuki which
was only mildly indicative of what the future would bring)
hooked up with Ken Downie and became BLACK DOG in 1991.
Black Dog is generally regarded as the first band to
regularly garner the "Intelligent Techno" description - most
notably acclaimed for their album, "Bytes" (1993). At the
same time, ORBITAL had begun to attain some critical
notoriety and was beginning to take techno music out of the
clubs and into the cafes, composing albums where the mighty
12 inch single had been the staple of many a techno act.
While Orbital was never fully regarded as part of the
"scene" that was becoming defined more thoroughly by the
works of RICHARD JAMES (APHEX TWIN) and AUTECHRE, they have
been considered an influential step in bringing the more
ambient / introspective wave of techno to market. Labels,
WARP RECORDS and Richard James's own REPHLEX RECORDS became
commercial springboards in 1992 / 1993 and what we think of
as "IDM" became more of a distinction, achieving genre
status.

There is another consensus that states "IDM" really started
as far back as Kraftwerk in the mid to late 80's and there
is no doubt a wide variety of influences have been drawn
upon in order to create the complex idea IDM has become
today. A listing of influences by two of the acts named in
the "IDM artists" above gives credit to "The Swans", "The
KLF", and "808 State", "Run DMC" and "Pink Floyd". Only the
"Ambient" movement paralleled the subversive, exclusively
dedicated following that has attached itself to IDM until t

and pasted)

I like Henry Kaiser's idea that if he owned a music store he
wouldn't have sections for different genres, just one big
catalog of sounds.

i've always hated the term electronica.

i simply call it electronic music. but sometimes when i say
'electronic' people think i'm into techno/house. so
'experimental electronic music' seems more accurate.

offline AlbertoBalsalm from Reykjavík (Iceland) on 2003-02-16 12:59 [#00557202]

rchrddvdjms: it's mostly experimental compared to other
electronic music genres. and all of it has some electronic
elements.

electronica is just as pretentious as IDM, although not
quite so pretentious as "laptronica"

If it wasn't called "Intelligent Electronic Music" how would
all the smart people locate it amongst the Dj Irene Cd's? I
cant remember the last time I saw little ravers and clubbers
listening to anything but "thump thump thump".

braindance! I hate categories though, a lot of people limit
themselves because they get a predetermined notion about a
certain category and refuse to listen.

If it was one big A-Z selection at your local record shop,
you'd be more inclined to listen or maye check out an artist
based on curiosity of album cover or name.

When people avoid certain sections they limit themselves.

My friends are huge at this. Stright to the metal section
then leave.

i like the classification IDM cuz its electronic but its not
ur normal industrial or stupid unst unst unst type shit. i
just don't like the almost arrogant meaning it
has....Intelligent Dance Music

i prefer that over some stupid name like laptronica. wtf is
that supposed to mean?

I think most of it isnt that intelligent, and also cant be
danced to. ;)

I say internet dork because most of the listeners share
their music on the internet (and make some of their music on
their computers) and dork because everyone here is a bit
nerdy/dorky/ect, and thats a good thing.

Yes indeed.
