next decade: end of the disc?

now that mp3's have become far more efficient than other
formats: vinyl, cd, .. do tapes even exist anymore??
in terms of size, cost, quality.. and record labels have
used them as promotion.. (and after the failure of MD's and
mp4's etc)
I'm guessing there will one day (soon) be mp3 players
outside of the computer (not just portable versions, but
like ones the size of home entertainment-sized CD or DVD
players) and record labels will release small, disposable
discs from which mp3 (or whatever files will be used then)
will be ripped and stored onto your mp3 player's library.
each release will come with a booklet, cover art etc ..
there would be no risk of losing, breaking, misplacing or
scratching your purchase.. there will be even less need (if
there even is any now) for the minidisc.. and considering
the popularity of mp3's and the fact that they're putting
the record industry in the worst shape it's ever been in, it
might be a good idea for the record industry to look towards
the current bane of it's existence to one day be that which
propells it into more success than it has ever seen.. they
could turn crazy profits by making this their main format..
esp because they could cut back on packaging and
manufacturing costs.. that is, both the consumers and the
producers.. anyway.. I dont kno.. what do u think

there will always be some form of textile music format....
people want to hold the artwork and read the pages... it's a
great feeling, bringing home a record you haven't heard yet
and opening it up in your room and putting it on for the
first time and being BLOWN AWAY by the music and wanting to
take in every little thing... i dunno, i THINK alot of
people still want that. i hope.

Indeed ... that's why the record industry hasn't undergone a
collapse of black hole proportions by now.

and mp3 will be replaced by a lossless format if discspace
is cheap enough

one thing that really puts an album together for me is the
artwork.... with mp3 piracy, you dont get the whole package.

With the Stanton Final Scratch and similair the reasons for
vinyl are quickly disappearing. I can't really see
CDs/equivalents disappearing for ages yet...

The next big format (the record execs pray) will probably be
the the massively copy-protected Super Audio CD.

No one is ignoring the profits being made from
copy-protected DVDs.

But look at the amount of value in some of these DVD
packages - for instance the Fellowship of the Ring special
edition DVD. That's real value for a collector and something
that the record industry just can't grasp very well at the
moment.

I don't care too much for packaging and the physical aspect
of music anymore... I used to... I've spent thousands on CDs
and now I never use them or look at them, they're coated in
dust... I've ripped all the ones I want onto the computer.

But I see the appeal and there will always be a place for
it... but I've just lost interest in that.

Plus I sat on my RDJ CD a while back and busted it... can't
bust an MP3.

what they need to perfect is virtual reality.

Then when you purchase music online you could throw on a
headset and enjoy a 3d world of art.

Maybe in the year 3000.

Someday they'll be amazed that we wasted our time looking at
monitors screens. And listening to speakers and headphones.

You might not be able to 'bust' an mp3, but you sure can
bust a hard-drive full of them.

Incidentally, if you have loads of CDs gathering dust, why
not just sell them to a second-hand music store or something
and buy some new stuff with the proceeds?

Actually I think the next level for music is going to be on
DVD's for now. There are already some Audio DVD's for sale
with music in 5.1 channels. Sounds damn nice to.
