Old skool is anything before 1990. Thats the rules.

Mozart is old skool. Jay!

I'm boring.

i havent made myself clear:

we have old aphex and new aphex

saw 1 would be an example of old aphex as ab3 or caustic
window

rdj album or come to daddy would be new aphex

where is ON?

i'd say drukqs is the new aphex
all previous stuff is old aphex

on would be in the middle of your perception :)

I think "On" can be considered to be quite "new". It sounds
as if it was made 92-93, it doesn?t sound like the old skool
acid stuff...

what I meant is that being released the same year as sosw it
sounds much more modern

old school, new school... who cares...rdj is a genius... i
like aphex twin, i llike on, i like afx videos [not as much
as ae, but...]

A lot of Aphex music is timeless. Think about the music
that was around in 97 and listen to Come To Daddy now. It
still sounds fresher than any of the shit that has been
released this year.

i totally agree

:)

just think about it.....we're all gonna be like 80 years old
or something and listening to Aphex and stuff.....heheheh

;)

man... I had never thought of that... and I dont know how I
feel about it either... 80 years?? wow

heheh just think.....you're 80, you've got grandkids, and
they're listening to all the shit that's gonna be out by
then (that's if music isn't outlawed!)

and it's STILL gonna sound ahead of its time!!!

for me ON falls in the old rdj sound category, simply
because it's equipment and soundwise the same era, ventolin
seems much more like the transition to cut-up
breaks,drum&bass, vibert influence and all...
the other transition is RDJalbum, analogTOdigital, you hear
the difference a lot. i thinkn at 80 years i'll be listening
to totally other musics, i hope so...

offline Bob Mcbob on 2003-02-07 03:35 [#00544563]

something is considered old school if it is made with
equipment that is outdated or no longer used.

i'd think that old skool would be determind by the kind of
sound the artist has

if you go by that, that'd mean that NIN's The Fragile is old
skool because Reznor still used stuff like his moog

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2003-02-07 03:44 [#00544577]

fact.. Jarvis Cocker directed the "on" vihjo...

. true

but that would mean if someone had 1 style last year and a
whole other style this year, last years stuff would be old
school.....where as if someone had made the same music for
10 years, the 10 year old stuff can still be called fresh
and new

well i meant that there'd be like a limit, you know?

i mean, like NIN's PHM would be classed as old skool nin,
because it was the first material that he did....broken
would be classed as old skool too (kinda), but TDS wouldn't

i do get what you mean about the 10 years thing though :)

mabey there is no gap between old and new, mabey its just a
gradual flow.....

hmm... does the on vijo feature RDJ? i don´t remember him
in it.. its a stop motion animation thing with lots of
beachy stuff flying in and out of shot. Maybe a cardboard
cutout of RDJ was one of thoses things... he IS quite
beachy!
