Most, if not all, of the versions on Soulseek are
fakes....be careful...

The tape I've heard is very good...no-ones gonna be
dissapointed...another step forward for AE; not as
continually sonicly extreme as Confield (although it has
it's moments...)...Less wholy digital as well; very warm in
places...

yay!...looking forward to release date even more now...

Jand--can you verify legitimacy of these files?

Most of the 128kb ones I've heard from SS are fakes...and
pretty obvious ones at that...(I don't believe Michael
Jackson is in AE for instance...one dl was PYT..hehe..)

Theres a tape rip goin around at 128 that is real... in 2
parts...

Also a 192kbs tape tape rip...split into tracks...

Brisks look fine tho...

Steer clear of the "dfw" ones...

The tracks are real. I inititally put up 2 MP3 files (named
Side A and Side B), but now i've cut them up, and put them
in what I believe to be the correct time for each individual
track. I was absolutely swamped with requests last night,
but I managed to upload to quite a few people, so hopefully
there should be a few sources for the files now. Sound
quality is pretty much the best you could expect from
analogue tape. It will certainly do the biz until the album
is released, and we can buy the CD anyway.

I have the tape. Converting tape media to an MP3 bitrate
above 128kbps is a pointless exercise, since the frequency
range, and sound quality of the source isn't the greatest
anyway.

offline xceque on 2003-02-01 10:37 [#00536640]

You're wrong. Compression to low bitrate mp3 from a tape
source will produce audible artifacts from the hiss. And
from treble frequencies in the recorded sound where it
exists, and tape is capable of recording such sounds.
The lower the bitrate, the more artifacts get introduced.
When encoding a tape rip you are essentially intruducing
more of a quality loss than from a better quality source.
The result is a file that I wouldn't want to listen too.
People often make the mistake of thinking that if the source
isn't so good, then it doesn't matter if it's poo
compression. The poor compression just compounds the
annoyance.
In a way, I suppose your right. If the source is shit, then
it doesn't make any different what compression you use cos
the result is still shit.
Whatever, I'll be doing myself a CDR from my tape and
cleaning it up nicely. I did my Blech, Eurowarp and
Cryptoburners tapes and they are up to CD quality with no
hiss.
Then I'll buy the proper Draft when it's released anyway ;)

Artifacts will be minimal, to none-existant if you use a
decent MP3 encoder such as LAME. I don't normally deal with
tape media anymore, but like with my vinyl rips, I edit them
manually in Soundforge after I record the wav. Regardless,
you'll NEVER get them to CD quality, nomatter how much noise
reduction you add.

Still, its probably a good thing since it gives everyone
more of a reason to buy the CD/Vinyl when its released :>

perhaps it is a wise idea to upload these mp3s to the ever
so elusive ftp server?

so, to those of you who heard it...

is it amazing? is it leaps and bounds from confield, like
all their previous albums have been leaps and bounds from
the ones before... or is it basically Confeild Part 2.?

Give me the ever so elusive IP/pass to the ever so elusive
FTP server, and I will upload it (hell, if it saves me 10
hours uploading it to 50 sources on slsk, i'm more than
willing).

As for the album itself: I like to describe it as Confield
0.5. Don't assume it is a hybrid between LP5 and Confield,
because it shares much more in common with the latter (many
tracks aren't instantly accessible, but the melodies become
more noticable after multiple listens). My particular
favourites are P.:NTIL, V-PROC, and Reniform Puls
(incidentally, these are the last three tracks, and are all
quite different from one another).

Its not as ground breaking as Confield was (lets face it, we
had never heard anything quite like it when it was
released), but is a strong album nonetheless, and grows on
you more with each listen.

I downloaded some tracks from soulseek, but I'm pretty sure
they're fakes... they sound alright, but definetly to simple
to be ae, and by your description they're almost surly fakes
