here, something to read about rdj and remixing-for those that havent seen this already :)
"I like doing it sometimes. Basically, I'll take a song and make it into something that I like. The original comes to me in a form that I hate, then I have to do a serious bit of alteration to it, and sometimes I don't even bother - I just give them a track that has nothing to do with the song." (Richard D. James on the art of remixing, 1997)
Here it is: a 26 track compilation of Aphex Twin's blinding remixes (plus two previously unreleased Aphex tunes). We know it's just devalued your precious 12" collection somewhat, but you can't blame us. Encompassing 10 years of always evolving, unpredictable Aphex Twin sounds, from acid trax and raved-up bangers to strangely commercial pop and his inimitably delicate, ambient empathies, 26 Mixes For Cash is a proper milestone, a greatest hits on the sly from the original leader of the dance music pack.
The Aphex Twin way is to approach mixes more like 'fixes'. If a track was any good, it wouldn't need remixing, would it? This could explain the presence of Jesus Jones' 'Zeros and Ones', and why his Curve remix, released only as a single-sided 12", is renowned as a complete classic. It might also provide a clue as to why he has turned down remix requests from Bjork, Madonna, Limp Bizkit and Super Furry Animals to name just a few.
Naturally, when Aphex Twin does something, he does it in his own maverick, mercurial way. But why on earth has he remixed such a bizarre collection of artists? Perhaps the question should be ^ what prompted all of them to seek the Aphex Twin treatment? From German hip hop outfit Die Fantastischen Vier, goth rockers Phillip Boa & The Voodoo Club, Japanese duos Nav Katze (twice!) and The Beatniks, as well as prolific Japanese five piece Buck Tick, German gabba purveyor Mescalinum United ("He's still going, he's done some lush trax. One of my faves is 'Frontal Sickness Part 2' by The Mover. I love it"), easylistening captain Mike Flower P

Mike Flower Pops and modern British composer Gavin Bryars, even Richard agrees, it's been a strange trip.
"With two of them I met the people in the street in town and got the money in an envelope. And one of those I remember was outside an off license, I handed over the DAT and got the dosh. But I prefer friends' music to play with," he adds, referring to the large number of artists he's remixed from his own Rephlex label. "It's more like 'work' with people you don't know."
Still, there were others who sought the Aphex Twin magic, and failed. When the record company sent a bike round to pick up the Lemonheads remix, Richard didn't intentionally pluck a random gabba track from his stack of DATs and pass it off as his remix. When questioned, he protested that he'd simply sped up the entire Lemonheads track and turned it into a snare sound. Truth told, he'd forgotten he'd ever agreed to do it. The 'remix' was never used. And those Nine Inch Nails 'remixes'. "I never heard the originals," he admits. "I still haven't. I don't want to either, or my remixes, for that matter."
it hasn't all been beer and skittles, though. The mix of David Bowie's 'Heroes' symphony, conducted by Philip Glass, was an agonising labour of love. The original vocal mastertapes were, obviously, held in a Swiss bank vault, and Richard insisted on having the vocals. The tapes took months to be delivered, and finally Richard had just four frantic hours to finish his mix - a startling, creepy, viscerally memorable reinterpretation. In the end, he never got paid and no one ever sent him a finished copy.

And if you're wondering about the glaring absence of the Aphex Twin mix of Beck's 'Devil's Haircut' (aka 'Richard's Hairpiece'), Beck's record company refused to license it for this release. Which is a shame, because Beck recently nominated Aphex Twin's Drukqs album in the annual US award The Shortlist Music Project (the equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize).
Are there any lost remixes?
"Yes, a lot more," he says teasingly, "and if I had more time and room on the CDs I would have dug them out. A Guy Called Gerald one was nice. Loads more versions of my own stuff, too."
However, 26 Mixes For Cash does contain two previously unreleased Aphex Twin tracks:
'SAW2 CD1 TRK2 (Original Mix)' comes from the second Aphex Twin Peel Session circa the Selected Ambient Works II era, and has only ever been broadcast on BBC Radio 1. 'Windowlicker (Acid Edit)' has never been broadcast or released in any form.
Aphex Twin is currently, as always, working on new material and will probably release something the next time he feels like buying another house. Any more remixes likely? "Yeah, I'm doing one soon with Daddy Freddy and The Bug," he confides. "But I'm usually happy doing my own thing..."
But of course. It's what he does best.

As far as I'm concerned, a nice clean digital copy of the Curve remix alone is nearly worth the price of entry! :-)
Downers: no Beck remix and no Saint Etienne "Who Do You Think You Are" :-(

on the subject of soundquality: are you familiar with the shorten (.shn) filetype? it's smaller than wav but bigger than mp3 and there supposedly is no quality loss compared to cd quality. personally, i can't hear the difference between 192kbps mp3s directly taken from cd (or shn) and the album itself...

I know Shorten, but I don't come across it much. Some Deadhead friends of mine use it to trade live shows and it seems pretty popular in the bootleg scene.
There's a few more lossless codecs like FLAC and Monkey's Audio. Monkey's seems to be the smallest and fastest.
192-256 Kbps mp3 is pretty transparent for me too, with most music. But if you need to convince yourself that it's not the same, try listening to Autechre's Second Bad Vilbel on mp3 (any bitrate) and CD. There's a significant difference.

The Krieger Remix is very cool. I have to get this CD !!
But I agree that there is a difference in the sound quality. Compression is compression but from 192kB/s its pretty fine. I had both BoC album as MP3 and thought they were just standart but when I got the CDs I reaaally got into into it.
