The Charts - Week Ending 24th January 1987

10 Real Wild Child - Iggy Pop
Despite the excesses, the scratches, the indecent exposure
and the long association with Bowie, this was the acrobatic
eyeballer's first Blighty hit. And it wasn't really Lust For
Life, all told.

9 It Didn't Matter - Style Council
With the Jam-mad sceptics converted, the only way was down
for Paul and his endless supply of Wrigley's.

8 Hymn To Her - Pretenders
La Hynde takes a break from encouraging veggies to napalm
their local burger joint to croon out a mid-tempo tearduct
loosener, in which she offered to "dress as your daughter",
bizarrely. Lord knows what Jim made of that.

7 Surrender - Swing Out Sister
Red-lipped, black-gloved toothy pop delight from Corinne and
those blokes, complete with hearty giggle after one and a
half seconds.

6 Big Fun - Gap Band
Funked-up, seminal piece of Tulsa twisting from the Wilson
siblings, with the necessity to sit on the parquet and
pretend to be an oarsman now a dim
and distant.

5 No More The Fool - Elkie Brooks
Hugely surprising smash for the MOR hoarsebox, though the
song was strengthened by a dramatic intro, the like of which
is usually reserved for movies and utilised in the seconds
before someone gets brutally macheted.

4 C'est La Vie - Robbie Nevil
"That's just the way it goes - that's life!"

3 Is This Love - Alison Moyet
Southend United's most famous fan bulks up on milkshakes
again to screech an expert pop song, though the ability to
misconstrue 'they never would have taken me as viciously as
this' remains too damned tempting to this day.

2 Reet Petite - Jackie Wilson
Took two years after his death to release it as a tribute,
but this rumpalong brasso ditty, complete with Morph like
animation video, remains absolutely unhateable, if sometimes
mildly irritating.

BRITAIN'S NUMBER ONE
Jack Your Body - Steve 'Silk' Hurley
Oh, the stories which came from this 'first ever house chart
topper', natch.
Hurley's complete absence from promotio

dammit! i wanted to post the no. 1 bit at least! :o/

BRITAIN'S NUMBER ONE
Jack Your Body - Steve 'Silk' Hurley
Oh, the stories which came from this 'first ever house chart
topper', natch.
Hurley's complete absence from promotional activity even
made lead story on John Craven's Newsround, for pity's sake.
Smash Hits had the nerve to print the lyrics, so the 'j' and
hyphen keys were begging for resuscitation by the time the
copywriter had finished the job. They even turned the
opening bassline gambit into lyrics - 'bom bom, bom-ba-dom
bom bom...' etc, a practice which only served to confuse
even more. Video featured lots of pre-talkies, jumpcutted
black and white 'comedy' clips which just added to the
confusion. "That's not singing, that's just talking!" -
Fathers everywhere.

Just by the names they sound as shitty as the US top 10
charts. Worse...That would be a good arguement.

What went wrong in the world of music? What caused this
massive influx of shit? We may never know...But if you do,
feel free to enlighten us all so we can put a stop to it.

there's no influx, its always been there. its just when
you're old (like flea) you tend to be more nostalgic and see
old music as good even though its no better. although having
said that, are britney & christina going to be as close to
my heart as tiffany & debbie gibson? err... perhaps not.
