i sell CD/DVD etc on half.com, which is owned and operated

I still do, but I'm usually outbid. It's not as easy to find
bargains as it was a few years ago.

I always check ebay/half.com before buying anything new.

I used to, but ever since I found ameoba records I havent
ever bought any albums off of ebay since. Ebay is great for
getting music gear, some great deals.

I'm slightly afraid of the ripoff and the shady ebay police.
Flashbulb made me suspicious

transactions.

Ive heard ebay horror stories too, but out of all the times
I have bought things using ebay, I have never been ripped
off (15 items).

I think you just gotta be a smart buyer, get in contact with
the seller before a buy, always, ask questions. Ebay = Yay!

Anyone else find that when they deal with big sellers (those
with hundreds/thousands of points) that they don't usually
bother to leave feedback for you (even if you pay promptly
whatever)?

True.

Another thing that makes ebay not perfect is reserve.

That's the gayest damn thing I've ever seen. If you want a
minimum price for an item, SET THE MINIMUM BID AS THAT.
Fuckers.

But yeah, I've had bout 30 transactions, not a problem
ever.
I still use it.

My real reservation with regard to reserve is as follows:

Sellers claim "no reserve" to attract more bidders. If the
max bid isn't what they want they then withdraw the item
from sale, usually claiming it was sold outside ebay. Some
of them add "Item listed elsewhere, may be sold there, in
which case item will be withdrawn." as a disclaimer in their
listing. However, it's conveniantly only sold away from ebay
when the max bid is low and after the auction has
ended. They seem to neither know nor care that just as buyer
enters into a contract to buy it buy bidding, the contract
has two halves and that the seller is obliged to sell to the
highest bidder unless they specify a reserve.

Ebay really ought to clamp down on this. It'd never happen
in a real world auction house and whilst it continues online
it makes ebay second fiddle to "real" auction houses...

Still, you can get some bargains on it. I just picked up
Bubbah's Tum - Dirty Great Mable remixes (includes the BoC
one) on 12" in mint condition for £5 :D

eBay will only clamp down on this if the buyers in question
structurally make an issue out of this, in other words,
complain everytime it occurs.

Problem is, very few people ever complain- you complaining
means bad feedback for you which can be quite damaging,
whereas only a slight dent in the companies reputation (if
they have feedback of 1000s compared to your few dozen).

I have seen places (often car/bike dealerships) with highish
(95%) positives, but the 5% are all complaining about items
being withdrawn in this way. Whilst it's only small
percentage wise, it can be a fairly large number of people
(say, 25-50) that have been screwed over (on what is an
expensive item) and still ebay do nothing about it.

I get the impression ebay don't really give a fuck and as
long as there are enough people prepared to list and buy
there, there's little need for them to spend a lot of
resources fighting fraud (despite what they claim). Same
goes for paypal.

Legislation and auditing is where it's at... they should be
held to account for the trading that goes on using their
services. Perhaps even take a holding fee from would be
sellers, which is kept by a third party (not ebay) which the
seller loses if they are found to be engaging in any sort of
fraud (which, whilst ebay is for many people, a bit of fun,
fraud is what scamming people amounts to).

I'm not talking about given bad feedback - that feature is
more for other users, not so much for eBay.

I mean making a case out of it to eBay itself.

before bidding on an item i use to check if its available at
amazon and for what price. it makes it much easier to decide
how much i max bid on an item. by the way who of you bid me
out last week? global goon AFTERLIFE ep for GBP13,50...
