Ever hit Randomize drum pattern in REASON ? I just did, and
REASON created a WICKED drum loop, I could never come up
myself..........it only need a bit tweaking and FX
proceessing, and there you go, INSTA Autechre !!!!

What do you think, how many IDM musicians use the RANDOMIZE
Button, to create those fantastic complicated Percussion
Loops !?
Do you consider this cheating.....

I thought that's what they all did. You mean they actually
sit there and arrange these sounds to come out the way they
do? I have a whole new respect for them!

Consider it "experimenting" :)

.....oh....so everyone does it....or what.....you can make
some really wicked things with it....LOL...

I think it is cheating, its letting a machine blatently do
all the work for you, which IMO is lazy and not fun....

so yes

I would agree with aron, randomize button = not hardcore

But.....no one will ever find out......and its not
completley cheating, I mean you still have to tweak some of
the sounds

This thread might go on for a while....

What about using Presets?

electronic dance music is in no way complex

Burroughs used to do this with text, but sometimes he didn't
edit it enough.

Randomizing shit is a good inspiration for any art. It's
where you take it from there that separates the men from the
boys.

I never have randomized anything in my songs.

And I know SOME people wouldnt know, but if I even tried to
use the randomize button I would feel like a cheater, and I
bet you a dollar I could tell if the beat was randomized or
not

;*)

I have ears for that kind of thing. I dont know, I have been
drum programming for a long time now, so its not that hard
for me to come up with stuff, maybe for a begginer or
someone starting out, to learn, or experiment, but other
then that I think its just being being a pussy.

This is ALL just IMHO though, please dont take it
personally.

hahhaha, dont even get me started on the presets princo!

hahahha

I could go off for days talking about how I feel about
that.

I never use the randomize button, I'm a control freak and
don't like giving the tool I'm using more power than myself.
amen.

But I don't look down on those that do, I think it can be
inspirational at times, I've even gotten some ideas from
fooling with it.

unless youre literally controlling every aspect of the sound
youre producing, then theres still some "randomisation" in
your tunes

"unless youre literally controlling every aspect of the

it really depends on what kind of stuff your producing.
Because if your dealing with the digital format, and virtual
studio's ...

ah nevermind.. too tired to type...

*passes out asleep*

controlled chaos is fine, if that's possible.. you introduce
randomness into your personalized context. that's why Ae
made the point that their music has an element of
randomness, but it's not like they weren't in control of it
since they are the ones who programmed the algorithms and
generative processes in the first place. In that way, they
were still obviously the artists since they dictated and
orchestrated the material to flow from the 'random'
selection process. similarly, if you hit the random button
in reason, I'd say it's ok as long as you know why and where
you're doing it, and if you are truly orchestrating its
output.

I don't really use random coz I sort of usually have an idea
of what i'm doing, and randomizing pitch doesnt stick to
chords etc etc and random drums don't stick to the loose
drum rules.

As for presets, I use presets on VST plugins all the time
(the chorus one on the FL flanger is really good, for
example) and on some synths. I don't mind it, as long as it
doesn't sound too presetty.
On the 3XOSC, I never use rpesets, though, mostly coz I knwo
how it soudsn and what everythgin does well enough not to
need to, but with thnigs liek the simsynth add on and the
WASP one, I do mostly (when I use them).

But most of my shiz sounds faaairly presetty anyway

wasnt too long ago when even using computers, samplers and
sequencers to laydown parts was considered cheating.

I use randomizers on rare occassions for my hihats...but the
ones I use on Fruity Loops only randomizes the Octave in
which the note is played...so the progression and the key
is still yours..

Dunno about in reason, but in floops it's not actually
totally random- you set ranges of various parameters of the
randomness, pitch, number of octaves range, which parameters
like vol and panning to effect etc.

Then when you combine the fact that you probably hit
randomise 5-10 times to get something good, then you tweak
it- it's not that different to just randomly hitting a real
drum kit and saying: wait that bit sounded good, I'll repeat
that and add a hi hat... yes that sounds pretty cool. I'll
use that.

I tend not to use it much and I always tweak it
afterwards... melodies it generates are gash, but it's okay
for drums. I tend to randominse one drum then build the rest
of the drums around that one.

I hardly ever use presets on plugins.. those mostly create
boring sounds..

Yes, the only thing I think I've used a preset on is
absynth.

when I am new to a plugin/synth..I use the presets as a
launching pad to tweak and manipulate..once I am familiar
enough I let loose and do my own parameters from scratch

I hardly ever use randomize functions. Arpeggiators are NOT
DONE for me. Its a miracle when I actually use an LFO to
tweak the filter instead of manually.
what I do a lot is reversing midi patterns and modify them
until them sound right.
