Philip Glass.. man.

Wow.. downloaded a lot of Philip Glass today and got
myself a new favourite. I've had a few Glass mp3's, and they
were good, but I never knew..

Are there anything else like this around?

Most of the music I listen to is pure tripe compared to
this.

I have to agree that a lot of his stuff is really good. I
seen him in concert when he came to Arizona. He played the
music to Dracula (the old one) behind a scrim that was
opaque at times so you can see them play.

If you haven't already get Koyaanisqatsi, Kundun, the
colaboration with Ravi Shankar and The Kronos Quartet.

Ah.. Koyaanisqatsi. Heard parts of that before. Good to see
that so many on soulseek got his music. I love my dsl.

Do you know of anybody else making music similar to his?
I've got some Ruyichi Sakamoto that's quite good too, but
only piano pieces.

I have "Einstein on the Beach". I love minimal music but 4
hours of it is a bit much. Another minimal album I like is
"Drumming" by Steve Reich

I also have Koyaanisqatsi. I had to go to California to get
it. I couldn't find it Arizona. That's a great album.

I like the Truman Show-music. Especially that tune when
Truman's in the middle of the road, blocking the way, arms
stretched in both directions. That song, very impressive,
I'd say.

I have that Glass/Shankar cd.. I think its called
"passages".

funnily enough, the Ravi bits are much better than the Glass
bits.

i got a few steve reich albums a little back from the
library too, sextet+marimbas(something like that), a cd with
pendulum music and then early works with clapping and some
others. actually i didnt like most of the tracks by him, i
definately prefer music for 18 musicicans by him.

I love Phil, I listened to little else for about two years
or so... recommended listening:

Solo Piano (absolutely fucking amazing album)
The Photographer
Hydrogen Jukebox
Songs from the Trilogy (a compilation of the best stuff from
the first three operas)
Glassworks
Koyaanisqatsi
Powaqqatsi (quite 'world music' for Phil)
Mishima

hardcore listening (ie long):
Einstein on the Beach
Akhenaten
Satyagraha
Music in 12 parts (the most hardcore minimalist Glass I've
heard)

also: Steve Reich (6 marimbas, clapping, and the AMAZING
City Life/Different Trains), Terry Riley (In C, Rainbow in
curved air)...

not like Phil but lotsa Phil fans like:
maybe some Arvo Part (religious minimalism sorta stuff)
some releases on the ECM label (but they're more minimalist
jazzy stuff)...
Keith Jarret...

Incidentally I thought that Foday Musa Sosa/PG collaboration
('Music for the Screens') fucking sucked.

ECM stuff is soooo good though... particularly Jan Garbarek,
Anya Garbarek, or Keith Jarret's solo piano stuff. Several
others who don't come to mind at the moment too.

glassworks and songs from the trilogy are my faves.

i'm not too fond of passages or dracula, though.

and no one's mentioned the candyman soundtrack! good stuff.

i just heard triumph the insult comic dog diss Philip Glass
on a music video thing, that he preformed originally on
Conan O'Brien, saying

"Phillip Glass, atonal ass
You're not immune
Write a song with
A fucking tune"

what a little bastard.
