Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste they hurry past it.
-Soren Kierkegaard, philosopher (1813-1855)
** women can be included in that statement as well, how very sad and true!!

For what purpose humanity is there should not even concern us: why you are there, that you should ask yourself: and if you have no ready answer, then set for yourself goals, high and noble goals, and perish in pursuit of them! I know of no better life purpose than to perish in attempting the great and the impossible...
Nietzsche, unpublished note from the 1873

"The belief in truth is part of the elementary forms of religious life. It is a weakness of understanding, of common-sense. At the same time, it is the last stronghold for the supporters of morality, for the apostles of the legality of the real and the rational, according to whom the reality principle cannot be questioned. Fortunately, nobody, not even those who teach it, lives according to this principle, and for a good reason: nobody really believes in the real. Nor do they believe in the evidence of real life. This would be too sad. "
- Jean Baudrillard, in "Radical Thought"
heptanary: you a philosophy student eh? moi aussi [sp?] - cool cool, yeah, Nietzsche I think will always be on my "island top 5" list of philosophers .. though some of this post-structuralism/post-modernism is getting to me at the moment .. :)

LeCoeur - wicked quote - I must really read some Kierkegaard - he's always intrigued me (ie. when referred to in passing in books and what not) .. parently he was quite a strange little chap, who published his books under all sorts of strange pseudonyms?

:) guess so .. yeah, I think (although this is quite a controversial area), that a lot of late Nietzsche has a lot of post-modern elements in it. But yeah, Baudrillard is quite provocative.
"truth is error"
"i'm afraid god is not dead for we still have faith in grammar" (or something to that effect).

this is a direct quote from my lecturer:
"It's very easy to set up a false oppositions: either we can be certain of
something or else we must be deeply sceptical of it. If you have those
two as your only options, then it's quite easy to generate the sort of
line that I associate with post-modernist writers. However, there are
plenty of other options: you might (and I do) typically accept what
people say as true, but always reserve the right to revise your beliefs
when more evidence comes in. This is what you might call a 'credulous'
as oposed to a 'sceptical' outlook. I suspect that without being
credulous, communication between people would be impossible. And I also
suspect that if you take Credulism seriously, none of the alarming
(paradoxical?) consequences of reasoning about science will follow."
smells fishy - but i'll persevere .. :) hehe

Shit that's one heck of an undergrad - spose its nice and thorough .. 3rd year also - tho i finish in half a year .. that's the way the system here works. Tho in all honesty, with hons, i'll be finished in 1 and a half years .. main interest continental philosophy, tho i don't mind dabbling in a bit of logic (doing intro to meta-logic at the moment) and did a bit of ethics in the past, but i've given up on that concept :)
