it, and it won't be here for a few weeks.

I'm flush with envy though. Must.......... kill............

Anyone thinking of buying an iPod should probably wait for
Toshiba's Gigabeat which is only out in Japan but
going worldwide soon. It should be quite a bit cheaper ...

does it also function as a portable hard drive?

thats the feature that just puts it over the top for me :)

The hard drive is standard PCMCIA size, so you should be
able to just pop it out and drop it into your laptop's
slot.

I assume they are following the USB Storage Standard - if
they are it will appear on your desktop like any other
drive.

It uses USB 2.0, so it will be PC-only.

USB 2.0 is supported on Macs as well.

That's good, but I see the built in ports are USB 1.1,
you'll need to buy an extra USB 2.0 card.

It will be cca. $400. Dunno if it worths though only 5GB
HDD.

Having a removable hard drive is a nice bonus though ...

I also just came across this 20GB player, to be released this
fall. No pricing given.

Bottom line: competition is good.

I'm wrong about USB 2.0. USB 2.0 devices should work with a
old USB 1.1 computer, but just at a much slower speed. So
all these new USB 2.0 players should be Mac compatible.

I'm on an 850mhz Power Mac as I type. Decked out with a
17'' Flat Screen monitor and nice speaks, with like 80 gigs
HD. And yes life is good. Macs are sweet machines.
