Requiem for a Dream... what did you think?

well after seeing just bits and pieces of the movie Requiem
for a Dream i had finally saw the whole thing last night. I
had heard from friends that they liked it and most of the
people i watched it with last night hated it. I on the other
hand have mixed feelings. I may have to watch it again.

I just wanted to know from the people that have seen it what
you think about the movie?

It's not very enjoyable really, but it's a brutally truthful
movie about drugs and what they can do to you... it's not
something I'd want to watch a second time, but in a way it
was very good... I guess it presented it's point amazingly,
but just not in an enjoyable way you know what I mean? Just
my opinion...

plus, I watched it one time when I was really depressed, so
that didn't help... :)

dunno. i most likely wont watch it again. thanks for the
reply.

I didn't think it was very realistic at all.

I don't think it was meant to be 100% realistic; some of it
was very stylised...

Def one of my fave films...pretty upsetting, unsettling
stuff...I can't watch it that often, a bit too close to home
in places...

Don't tell us you've had an experience with a double-ended
dildo too?!

I thought it was great, though harrowing. The soundtrack was
class too. I liked the rhythm of the fim; the repetitive
snorts, injections and pill popping. Not one to watch with
your gran on a Sunday afternoon though.

Anyone read the book?

How did I know you were gonna mention the Ass to Ass
scene...(I heard rumours that was what the chapter was
actually called on DVD, will have to check that when I get
in...)...

Well, when Meho is away from the MB somebody has to keep the
level of depravity at its optimium level.

Did you think that scene was done gratuitously or dealt with
sensitively?

Who's the author? Meho recommended him but I forget now.

Helbert Selbey Jr... (that spelling might be a bit
off...)...

and as for that scene...I dunno...it was a good scene and
people remember it...I guess they could have been a lot more
gratuitous with it really but what they showed was
enough...

Altho Meho may have wanted that section to be slightly
longer..;)..

The woman in it was the girl in Labyrinth.

That's the kind of movie that you only have to see once.. I
enjoyed it but don't want to see it again.

It may not be 100% realistic but it convinced me not to do
serious drugs

I agree, it was too unreal to be a "serious" cautionary
tail, but it was effective.

Jonesy: Which woman? The guy's mum?

I don't hate the film, but I don't really like it. It has
the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Its greatest asset is it's
score, which is absolutely incredible - if you take it away,
the film becomes a collection of mixed up caricatures.
Despite it's pretensions, it's an interesting comparison to
make with Mulholland Dr, because on some levels, it's
equally as surreal (although I don't think this is how a lot
of viewers experience it). I think it aims a lot lower than
Mulholland does, and the whole thing felt a little cheap to
me. I'm interested that it seemed like an anti-drug
commercial to others because that was my impression on first
viewing. I didn't like the cliches - aspiring model has to
debase herself (and did anybody else find her coerced blow
job with Keith David "worse" than A$$2A$$?), black guy has
to be involved in "deal- gone-wrong-with-guns"... OK, Leto's
"OMG my arm has to be cut off" storyline wasn't a cliche.

Hey, what the hell, different things are going to appeal to
different people, but I didn't find Requiem to have any real
depth. Mind you, I also disliked Aronofsky's Pi - his
repetitious
"slam-slam-slam-can-you-see-what-I'm-getting-at-here?" style
just makes me think of film students everywhere trying to
get a break. I guess he won the lottery. Anyhow, it's
nowhere near a godawful film; Requiem gets a 6/10 for me -
it got extra points for that incredibly memorable score, and
Burstyn's over the top performance.

I like 'requiem'. I saw at the Rotterdam Film Festival a few
years back, not knowing what it was about, huge screen, on
my own.

I almost passed out during the last 5 minutes..

Jennifer Connelly who plays the girl (marion) was in
Labyrinth.

not that i'm gonna read through everyones replies cuz i
could barely sit through the fuckin' movie itself but it's
wierd and i'm all for wierd.

i've never been an addict so i can't give that whole
perspective on it but it's a fuckin' movie you gotta enjoy
it for what it's worth otherwise you'll become too
judgemental about everything.
