....strange to make a topic 'bout reggae here but well.....
I was listening to old rocksteady and i'd like to talk of
it.

Reggae (and then dub) was the first musical style I dig
seriously when I was younger.....

do you like it ?

(I won't talk about everything after 80's because it's not
reggae anymore, it's crap)

Yeah i love it!!!
Ive been buying these Trojan box sets lately , exspensive
but well worth it.
And i kinda agree on what you said about "everything after
80's"

It gets very expensive if you want to own the whole
colection !
So far i have the "Dub" "Ska" "Producer Series" "D.J". and
"Dancehall" box sets

No i haven't heard the souljazzrecords stuff.
Actualy i have just started listening to reaggae seriously.
Buying compilations like the boxsets is a good way to get
into it.
I started to really like it when i heard a Lee Perry special
on the radio.
Next day i went out and bought "the complete UK Upsetter
singles colection volyme 1" hehe!

(the sentenses gets dissplaced/chopped up in my messages,
perhaps im the only one seing this???)

(4 ze messages bug > it sometimes happens)

Lee perry is a pioneer. I'm glad you like it too. He
released loads of stuff. loads 'n' loads. and half of it is
real good.

Souljazz released recently some compilation 'studio one
dj's' / 'studio one souls' with old rareties - you can
purchase them blind, it rocks.

If you want more about reggae music & dub, I'm your man ;)

I love 2nd wave British ska from the early 80s, like the
Specials.

Yeah they're not dub or reggae but I love them nonetheless

2nd wave british ska is very punky, isn't it ? it influenced
quite a lot of french rocks bands. (not necessary well-known
ones)

yay! Sido still exists!! ...I was gonna email you, mate as I
was wondering where you'd got to...

I fucking love Dub...that was my intro to electronic music
really; busted up old Scratch Perry & U-Roy tapes...I'm
tempted to go for a couple of those boxsets mentioned...

Best guide to Reggae I've found is BASS CULTURE by Lloyd
Bradley...recommended if you wanna the whole story about the
music & it's history/development...

And Dub always makes me think of William Gibson &
Neuromancer....his descriptions of it in that book are
perfect...

Yeah it is pretty punky but there are definitely lots of
reggae influences in it also. I don't know about the French
bands though; no idea there

Ska is like Reggaes older brother...it's a pretty fine-line
between em sometimes...

ps check out the Terry Hall/Tricky version of Ghost
Town...pure class...

blood & fire has some excellent rereleases and compilations
from the '70s; king tubby, lee perry, prince jammy, horace
andy etc...

this music shouldn't even be compared to the 80's dub &
reggae... it's just awful to hear those horrible digital
sounds taking the place of real drums & tape echoes & spring
reverbs...

i disagree entirley ragga is so good - it's the basis of
alot of hardcore and drum and bass - there are so many
wicked production crews nowdays but on the re-issues tip i
like pressure sounds - esp the 2 prince fari new chapter in
dub records - coiuncidentally the owner of that label
;adrian sherwood (who worked with primal scream etc) did
some great 80's dub records - also mark stewart took it to
another level (he worked with tricky on his firsat album) +
there is a great dub album of massivce attacks stuff by the
mad proffesor - who also did some great 8o's dub - but check
modern ragga it's having it right now...

sorry for being absent, but 'I backl with the 'dub' topic
because there is soooo much left to say..

- astrid gil : you're right, good things in ragga, but I
was talkin of modern reggae with basics rythm and flat synth
instead of brass.

- meho : !!!!!!!!!! at least I'm not the only one to think
african headcharge is ace ! african headcharge is something
huge, you know ?

I love reggae & dub...
Lee Scratch...
Joe Gibbs, Studio 1, Sly & Robbie... African Dub vol 3 is a
good 70s Studio 1 dub album, sounds almost like the Orb in
places. (but better!)

Ska fans check out Prince Buster FABulous greatest hits

just wanted to throw in my two cents not like i'm expecting
any replies.

i really dig reggae, now i think i understand the diff
between reggae and ragga, i guess, bc and ad.

i was really into ska about 7 years ago when it came through
with the "3rd wave' but that only made me dive deeper into
it like the more traditional bands ie skatalites, desmond
dekker, maytals etc... and that in turn got me into reggae
also helped by the fact that at the same time i also became
a pothead!

i'd love to get really deep into it as well but there is so
much music out there now of all styles that i can't really
go after one thing or another. add to that a limited
income....
