the book bored me... I did read it, ages ago, but I couldn't
get through the Two Towers... it's a good story, just
dragged out a bit I think... the movie is great cause it
condenses it... just my opinion...

movie was a wonderful creation from the books, both of which
are just wonderful

I do think people should read the books first, and see how
close the movie got to each persons pictures of how
everything looked.

Saw it multiply times in theaters, can't wait for the Two
Towers.

yeah the two towers book is heavy going all those battles n
stuff
have you read the simarillion? its about the formation of
that world and stuff, its a slog, i think he was a bit mad
by that time

I always thought he wrote most of the Silmarillion first
before the trilogy.

If I could start over, I would read them in this order:

The Silmarillion (don't read the last chapter!!!!)
The Lord of the Rings
then read the last chapter of the Silmarillion

The Silmarillion is a pretty tedious read at parts, but bits
of the Lord of the Rings (like the songs about the Sun and
Moon) make more sense when you know the whole context.

LOTR is cool. I've never read the books - I started in nr.1
but got so bored.

on the 'reading the books first'-thingy, thats a tough one.
I think I was kind of lucky not to have read the books,
because now I could watch the film as just that, a film.

on the other hand, if you see a film you really like and
read the book afterwards it can really interfere with the
imagery.

I saw it last night....it was so boring and long.

qrter, you're very right, it is hard to see the movie and
then read the book.

I guess some of us make it more than a "film" if you will,
more a fantasy adventure into a different world, though I
see what you are saying about going in as just a film.

ExHore-that's odd, the 3 hours flew by for me every time I
saw it, maybe seeing it not in the theater is distracting?
iono, that's weird

i like the movie (and always mean to reread the books)...
but some things annoy me about the movie........

....why are the elves so damn DORKY? and so fucking WHITE?
Legolas is pretty cool, but the elven king guy is totally
lame, the actor seems clueless in how to portray the elve.
his character just does not work. maybe they should have
had Samuel L Jackson as the elven king, he woulda been cool.
i guess Tolkien was sort of unintentionally rascist....
white is pure, while swarthy meant corrupt and foul.

... why does the dwarf seem to act like a Klingon to me???

... when Bilbo lusts after his ring, the film uses digital
effects to make him look monsterish... when i saw the movie
in the theatre, the audience laughed at it...

... a lot of it could be more subtle, but I guess Jackson
has to try to make to appeal to a wide audience, since they
are investing like a half a billion dollars into the
project......

..... and you can buy the "one" ring replica for $75!
special offer!

You know what I liked about the movie more than the book?
No reading!

hehehe I stole that from Jim Gaffigan

I think you are really missing out if you don't read the
books....

I re-read em after seeing FOTR and loved em loads more than
when I first read em in my early teens...I used to think TTT
was the most boring part but this time through I couldn't
get enough of it...

(and yeah, I bought the DVD on Tuesday as well...I know I
shoulda waited for the 4 DVD version but I just couldn't
wait to see it again....I agree about the 3 hours passing
very quickly, & it was the first film in ages where I
haven't got bored and wanted to leave after 1/2 hr...)...

That thing at the beginning (that goes "my precious.....")
is practically as evil as Stripe from gremlins or Gamork
from the neverending story.

that's golum... there's a bit on the DVD where they show
some of what he's like in TTT (which if the 10 min feature
about on the DVD is anything to go by, is gonna be even more
visually spectacular that FOTR...)...

i must agree that the actor for the elven king was a
complete knob, he dosent fit in.

even legolas is a mute!

liv tyler is quite fit though, i always had a thing for
elven women. very elegant and sexy

I bought the DVD version when it came out on Tuesday...I've
watched it twice now. The extra footage is great! There's
also a four DVD version released soon, but I'm not going to
buy it, I like Lord of the Rings enough to do so.......Star
Wars, then maybe! ;)

I agree on peoples critisism on the elves here.I think
Jackson said in some interview that doing the elves was one
of the hardest parts of the movie.
And i can understand what he means.

I don't agree on the critisism on Bilbo turning monstrous
tho because it kind of fits with how Tolkien described it.
Atleast it fitted with the mental pictures i got when i read
the books.

IMO LOTR rings is a pretty flawless movie.
I get more and more impressed everytime i see it.
The whole Mine sequense is masterful!!
Like Raimons said to me , "the great thing about the balrog
is that when it opens his mouth it is not a silly monster
scream we hear , but the sound of fire like a huge
blowtorch"

I was disscusing the movie with Raimons yesterday and i just
realised that we will get to see the mighty Balrog again in
Two Towers.
