i think theres a topic here on fear and loathing in las
vegas. brazil was directed by the same person who directed
that movie, Terry Gilliam.
Its about a man battling a giant bureaucracy and slowly
going insane. its just a very imaginative movie.

A great movie.

Could be called Futuristic Kafka

slowyly going insaine? no. he gets lobotomized about 1/3rd
itno the flick and the rest of the film takes place in his
mind post lobotomy. (original ending, get the dvd.) :)

there's a ton of movies like this, i call it the
"oblivious-dead" genre. movies where the main char dies, and
the rest of the movie is him (or audience) being oblivious
to it. ex; donnie darko, jacob's ladder, and vanilla sky.

at first i thought that brazil was a master piece, but the
concept has been done way to many times, hell, if i was able
to dub a whole genre from these types of movies, then it's
been doen way to much.

in response to your post, i have the criterion three disc
dvd, and at one point on the commentary, Terry Gilliam
actually states that with Brazil he set out to make a movie
that is funny but is about a man going insane. Maybe
Jonathan Pryces character doesn't display all of the normal
characteristics you would attribute to going mad, but he is
being driven to the edge by a repressive society. And don't
make so many assumptions. Its silly.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-08-04 13:44 [#00336270]
Points: 4428 Status: Addict

oh yeah, and it is never really explained whether or not he
is actually lobotimized.
and i would hardly call this an "obvious dead" film. that
sequence takes place during the last fifteen or so minutes
of the movie, and up to that point the main character is
very alive.

yeah, but in your post about it, you came across like that
was the plot. a man going insaine from a opressive society.
There's a huge gap in that statement.

humor-yes, i can see that. robet dinero as the
air-conditioning repair man! :). (no, kiddies, i'm not being
sarcastic its genuinly a funny as role).

how is there a "gap in that statement."
and you seem to have been snoozing while this movie was on,
becuase its nearly three hours long and he doesn't get
lobotomized until the end.

it's never explained that he's lobotomized or not? yes, it's
left to the imagination, but in that ending, it's very
obvious. Just becasue someone doesnt' flat out present, or
tell you, that soemthign happened doesn't mean that it
didnt'.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-08-04 13:48 [#00336275]

it isn't in the least bit obvious.

offline zaphod from the metaverse on 2002-08-04 13:50 [#00336276]
Points: 4428 Status: Addict

whats obvious is that the main character has resigned
himself to his inner thoughts because its all he can do.
you're taking it too literally. i think you need to watch
this movie again.

true, true. i haven't seen it in a long time. but the fact
of the matter is this: you first explained the plot as this:
"Its about a man battling a giant bureaucracy and slowly
going insane."

the key word i'm arguing against is the "slowly" part.

*un-lobotomizes himself*

ok, i said that i gave up, but it seems you're still
interested in drawing this out.

ok, my point is that you left out a huge turning poin to the
plot, regardless of when it happened. The guy asked you what
it was about; and unless you're spareing him the ending
(which i have the utmost respect for, but doubt you did)and
all i was correcting was the fact that the main char.
doesn't slowly go insaine.

there's no need to get upset. i'm not shooting you down, but
i dont' take kindly to agression.

ONE OF MY FAVOURITES!!

I was watching the Criterion DVD edition with Gilliams
commentary track last night.

shit, I can dream this film I have seen it so many times.

and on the lobotomy-thing - he really only gets tortured
into insanity in the last 20 minutes. thats what Gilliam
says at least and really, thats how I've always seen it.

1985
im 1 hour into the film-its a very caotic film, the scene
with de niro its a funny one, and visually its almost like
watching the 5th element
but the story gives you something to think about...

the one with the ridiculous "Love Conquers All"-version.
INSANE!!

it seems I'll have to buy it now too. *sigh*

I also would like the 2-dvd Criterion Edition of Rushmore.
also SOOO expensive.. :(

nah, 12 monkeys is a nice story, with a few kind of rickety
philosophical implications.

brazil delves deeper.

the imagery in twelve monkeys is a diluted version of
brazil's.

but bear in mind this film is earlier then both of those.

also interesting to know that Gilliam has never read
