My annoyance with Rephlex

Earface from just off the on 2001-08-04 17:27 [#00019705]

Don't get me wrong, Rephlex put out some excellent music.
But I am a little sick off all this 'Braindance' bollocks. I
mean that picture of a brain with a foot coming out of the
bottom is absolute shite for starters.
What's more, where Braindance might well be "boundless;
entertaing; rephreshing; fulfilling" etc., why do they have
to boast about it?
I think the most exciting element about this kind of music
is that it does not pretend to be anything - it is
incredibly personal and thus highly mentally stimulating.
When we have to be told how fucking amazing the music is by
the artist/label themselves it comes across as incredibly
pretentious and even quite arrogant.

Redrock on 2001-08-04 17:33 [#00019707]

that reminds me: does this universal indicator thing have
owt to do with afx?

The Grey Gentleman from Eugene, Oregon on 2001-08-04 17:43 [#00019708]

Err, I think "Braindance" is really just a marketing/general
term the Rephlex folks use as a blanket label for their
music.

Personally, when I think of braindance, I think of Crappy,
or that one song off of the RDJ album, where the songs are
funky as hell and you want to dance to them, but you'd look
like you're suffering from a seizure, so you have to resort
to letting your mind wig out instead.

Anyhow, just keep in mind Rephlex is a business, too, and
they need to sell and market stuff. I kinda like the brain
foot logo, it's corny. Course passerbys can never make out
the "braindance" text on the back of their shirts, they
always think it says "brain damage".

Anyhow, they're just enthusiastic, and marketing their
goods...

Earface from just off the on 2001-08-04 17:48 [#00019710]

why is it that labels such as Warp and Scam don't behave in
the same manner then?

The Grey Gentleman from Eugene, Oregon on 2001-08-04 21:17 [#00019740]

Erm, because Warp is much bigger than Rephlex, which is
still run out of a house, I believe. Warp has a larger
variety of "genres" (don't like that word) in their larger
rosters than Rephlex.

It's a give/take thing. I see a lot of people not signed to
Rephlex who label themselves as "braindance" and I think its
silly, but it's their right. Maybe Rephlex will get big some
day and sue them for copyright violations ;-). Right now
though, I just see the blanket term "braindance" used by a
buncha mates at Rephlex.

It's no big deal really. It's just words... plenty of more
important things to ponder, like those poor starving kids in
Beverly Hills, California.

Organ Grinder from my own little fantasy world on 2001-08-04 21:20 [#00019741]

Hmm.... good point, Grey Gentleman. Good point.

DMX Krew doesn't seem like braindance to me... just cool
80's retro pop.

Good point.

Chilled from Buh>? on 2001-08-04 21:53 [#00019751]

i think braindance and idm should be banned as names
reallyt....just call it abstract electronica..cuz thats all
it is really if anyone was to be idm or braindance fsol is
well deserving of that title

=|R3FL3X|= from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-04 22:23 [#00019765]

Yeah Warp has Red Snapper on their label. Thats FAR away
from "IDM" {hate that term} Red Snapper is like hip hop-ish
with beats and stuff. Very good. But I do KINDA agree about
the braindance thing its kinda lame in my opinion. I mean I
love REPHLEX records and stuff, but still thats stupid to
me.

thanksomuch from over there on 2001-08-05 05:25 [#00019815]

anotonio banderas from nowhere on 2001-08-05 05:34 [#00019816]

I know I know! I agree with you 100%. Reflex needs to
dissapear already. Im so tired of seeing his weak responses
on every post!

FlyOnTheWall on 2001-08-05 06:34 [#00019820]

Red Snapper are no longer signed to Warp.

=|R3FL3X|= from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 2001-08-05 11:08 [#00019848]

This is so obvious. I wonder who these 2 people going around
posting on every topic are? The same??? Hm... so hard to
figure out indeed. What stupid shit, no one cares. Don't you
see people are just ignoring you and keeping the real topic
going around your shit?

Red Snapper is now with what company?

Earface from just off the on 2001-08-05 17:04 [#00019884]

Organ Grinder: I think Grey Genlteman's points are far from
'good'. Commenting on 'poor starving kids in Beverly Hills'
- you could be doing just the same thing mate.

thanksomuch from over there on 2001-08-05 20:07 [#00019908]

I can totally agree with that first post in a way. I'd
rather not be told what something is by whoever makes or
endorses it. I like to make up my own mind. I dont like
people telling me that choosy moms choose jif because what
if i was out of skippy?

and watmm's very own thanksomuch used to post here 3 years
ago.

I don't like the braindance thing either, it's a bit of a
gimmick more than anything else.

"abstract electronica" is just as
pretentious/ambiguous/ridiculous a term as "idm"..

braindance is just a marketing term that rephlex use. they
insist on describing it because they have to give potential
customers some idea of what theyre buying.
its no good just trying to sell to people who already know
what theyre buying. to keep up + running they have to
attract new business.

Besides i think they are always half serious half joking,
just look at the words used to describe it!

As ecnadniarb said it's not to be taken seriously at all...
:P

i agree. i never took the term braindance seriously, and
don't think it is a serious attempt from rephlex. more like
a tounge in cheek, ironic statement. it also ties in with
sleevenotes from the sixties where someone would boast about
the significance of the particular release(which rephlex
brilliantly did with the tango n vectif release). this i
think explains why rephlex says they are: "boundless;
entertaing; rephreshing; fulfilling". all in all, just a
humourus way of describing their musical profile.

mine was a retoric question

meaning that I find his argument a little weak
above all the first paragraph:

"Don't get me wrong, Rephlex put out some excellent music.
But I am a little sick off all this 'Braindance' bollocks. I

mean that picture of a brain with a foot coming out of the
bottom is absolute shite for starters."

context + missed the point.
