Don't know if anyone underestimates it, if so: Shame on you!

The thing is. more so than any other autechre alubmn works
as a complete whole... some tracks don't make sense when
listened to seperately but when taking all together it's
like one great novel.... i used to listen to this albumn so
much....
chiasitc and confield have a connection in a sense...

chiastic slide, the turningpoint for ae, the album where
they started to really get experimental.

you got the listen to it very loud.

bah! Humbug. It's fabuloso, but mediocre by their
standards. It does have classics though, specifically Pule
and Recury. Cipater too. I just think they have better
work than this. Even Envane and Cichlisuite are more
interesting to me.

offline CORTEX from Canada on 2003-04-23 22:35 [#00665808]

it's their most 'machine-sounding' release.

ahh, I dunno, I think personally I like it because it was
the first Autechre album I got so there is attachment there,
but its also good in a respect that it really is a
transitional album, (as stated by Autechre; not a follow up
to Tri Repetae; LP5 is the follow up to Tri Repetae)
combining ambience with the new experimenting. I just think
it has so much texture. And also the way the album is put
together, I heard they drew from about 70 songs. The
different ground it covers is awesome, and the way it goes
way out and is reduced to nothing in the end...

It's incredible, very crunchy and makes me want to eat some
raw carrots.

Don't AE themselves consider this the red-headed step child
of the AE family though? The weak link?

man, everyone here loves this one.
i think it's too repetitive, the weakest ae release.

Too repetetive, yes!
Weakest release, no .....
Incunabula is the worst. Ugh, now that one is boring.

offline Cfern from Sacto (United States) on 2003-04-24 01:21 [#00665922]

well glad MOST of you like it.... in america lp5 was the
follow to tri repeate to most listeners ... any ways yes 70
songs which became envane, chiastic slide and cichisuite...
all good...

chiastic slide is undoubtable a transitional albumn....but
that doesn't stop it from being the best....

also... i think most listeners heard it for the first time
years after it was released... i didn't get into autechre
untill ;bout 2000... it still sounds ahead of it's time and
most electronica.....

offline nacmat on 2003-04-24 04:18 [#00666171]

from lonelymachines.org:

In retrospect, Chiastic Slide stands as one of their best
records, and is generally considered the great lost
electronic record of the 1990's. Its influence on the
electronic scene is noticable even today in the work of
groups like Four Tet and the Boards of Canada. Even Thom
Yorke cites it as an influence. At the time of its release,
however, critics were split between calling it brilliant or
screaming that it was unlistenable. Nothing records, in
sticking with the general botch-job they've done handling
things, declined to carry the record at all for American
distribution, and for five years, listeners stateside would
be forced to pay upwards of $30 for an import copy.

A casual listener would never have heard Envane, which is
a crucial link between Anvil Vapre, Tri Repetae and this. As
a result, the dark, organic and edgy material here would
have seemed like the output of a completely different group.
There isn't a single straightforward beat to be found on
this record. If Tri Repetae was the sound of machines coming
to life and chattering away to each other in the dark, then
this is the sound of those machines trying to drag
themselves out of a dark tarpit under the glare of acetylene
lights on some forgotten evil robot construction site.

is this album better than LP5? so far I don't like it that
much, though I'm sure that'll change

chiastic and lp5 are both genious

its incredible cos all the albums I find them genious

incunabula - excellent begining
amber - absolutely perfect ambient that shows a bit of what
is about to come
tri repetae - perfct maths
chiastic slide (read this thread)
lp5 - the most diferent in my opinion and maybe their best
(not for me)
confield - my favourite
draft 7.30 - beautiful

amazing 7 albums. all of them could easily be in a list of
the top 50 electronic albums

Only the Cipater, and damn it, this album is fantastic.

I absolutely love Confield

does amber come off really dated nowadays? or does it hold
up pretty well like SAW2

I think amber is great... amazing... whereas incunabula does
sound dated in some places, I don't find this to be true
with Amber...

first ae song i heard was foil, and i thought i was
amazing...now i have trouble listening to amber, it's
probably my least favourite

as for chiastic slide...i love it. i love the was ciapter
glides into the slower beat half way through, it's just an
amazing track!

i remember listening to hub on the way home late at night a
while ago, and i (wasn't driving) was just zoned out trying
to keep with the beat, it was an incredible feeling

*Chiastic Slide* is the one album that can make my jaw drop
in wonder everytime I listen to it. It is so rich, it is
almost tangible...I can feel this music like a physical
presence around me.

It is just so chunky, crunchy and funky...and parts of it
are so beautiful, they make me cry.

those songs quickly found a way into my head, and now it's
like they've always been there.

Chiastic Slide is maybe my favorite Autechre... heh, I
always seem to pick a different favorite... this was my
second purchase, and I just always loved it... at least
three of the songs are classics, Cipater, Tewe, Cichli... I
bet any Autechre fan listing their top 10 autechre songs
would include at least one of these three songs, if not two
or all three of em... this album is AMAZING!!!

Nuane is real sweet too!!
