No matter where you go, your going to find the same garbage. Traveling is fun tho, seeing all different sights and sounds. CAnt wait till High schools over im gona tour the globe. =)

I think about this alot. I don't think you move to London though and bump into Richard D. James on the street at which point he invites you to his bank to watch him make music with him and his pals. You have to seek out for this scene anywhere, just like in the U.S.

every excuse we have for culture is actually a fucking marketing campaigne of some sort!
im not some niave idiot... i dont expect to bump into rdj, of course!
but there u can drive for a few hours and experience a whole other country...
go to wherever for the weekend! different cultures!
and electronci music (and therefore the small percentage of it thats good) IS more important there!

don't be jealous! i'll share everything i know about, and i only learn from other people like you and the rest on this board (plus some magazines and web sites).
if you buy the japanese version of the telefon tel aviv album in the stores, or just see it there, try to find out the name of the bonus track. it is probably the last track on the album.

well, i'm in berlin right now, not missing home particularly, but nonetheless -- fuck the states, yeah, mostly for the paranoid, petty, middleclass psychosis that spread like a plague throughout the populace this last decade. but canada, ok:
manitoba godspeed you black! emperor a silver mt. zion broken social scene russian futurists skinny puppy venetian snares plogue, who also distribute their own modular music creation for free
akufen solvent tim hecker bullfrog
these are just the big names.
three big electronic music festivals: http://www.elektrafestival.ca/ http://www.mutek.ca/ http://www.newformsfestival.com/
last year the dmc technics world champion was a canadian.
the government, via the cbc, is subsidising the following websites to support canadian culture:
http://www.newmusiccanada.com/ http://www.rootsmusiccanada.ca/ http://www.justconcerts.com/ http://www.cbcradio3.com/ http://www.120seconds.com/
and launched zedtv, which lets people upload their own content or music videos to be broadcast on the air.
the montreal scene is INCREDIBLE -- montreal is an amazing city in every possible way. the vancouver scene is kicking, compared to its size, and toronto -- while still slumbering a bit -- is nonetheless bursting at the seams with new music.
SOOOOO
don't boo-fucking-hoo me about nothing happening in north america.

listen, i lived in toronto for five years, and still do on/off for the summers (my parents live there) and much as i love the european scene, and much as i'm currently doing my best to transfer to a university in belgium, if you think nothing's happening in toronto, you're just not going out enough.

The montreal scene is absolutely thriving from what i've seen and heard. The LA art scene revolves around the universities but there's some excellent multimedia (music too) work being produced there. New york is still the art capital of the world, at least for trade. It's true, you have to actively seek out the creative side of a place, it doesn't just fall into your lap, at least in my experience.

See, government or private funding of the arts is one of those grey areas i can never quite have a concrete opinion on. Outside funding always seems to imply an enforced point of view to me, somehow. A serious programme of subsidized funding of the arts, no matter what the content would be nice, but i doubt it ever quite works like that.
