I am going to buy 1-2 albums soon, because i got some money
for a grad present recently..I was considering getting my
first plaid cd (unsure as to get double figure or p-brane
or?) If i'm into...aphex, autechre, boards of canada, tori
amos, bjork, pj harvey, the cure, depeche mode, the walkmen,
squarepusher, radiohead, system of a down, the fog,
portishead, sigur ros, mum, mouse on mars, new order, joy
division, the flaming lips, mercury rev, dj shadow, the
beatles, pink floyd, primal scream, air, david bowie, beck,
godspeed!, mogwai, modest mouse, etc. could you guys suggest
anything by anyone i could pick up based on some of the
artists i've listed?

I was listening to both Double Figure and PBrane today, both
are good. It works this way if you ask me: Double Figure is
longer and more varied so buy that one. The Warp
compilations (10+3 is Good) are good for cross-spectrum
listening. My summer album this year will probably be Pause
(FourTet) until Beth Orton's album comes out. If you get
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club your friends will figure out
your cool in a year or two (Canadain culture being slow like
it is). The Tragicly Hip have a new album to, and so do
Rush, eh?

I own supermodified as well..lovely album! so good...cujo,
on the other hand, no, but i noticed that his older work
just isnt as good imo as his older stuff, how is that album
though?

much, but i havent really gave them a solid listen..i will
do again..I should really get a plaid album..i've never
heard much beth orton, but heard she is really good

I just picked up Brothomstates "Qtio"..it a pretty pleasant
listen..he's a bit like a IDM greatest hits covers
band..Starts with a Funkstorung/Prefuse73 style song..a
Plaid style song...and ends with a couple of pretty decent
Aphex style drilly workouts..

I like Global Goon (Johnny Hawk) who Richard James described
as a musical genius.

so have U tried his latest
'vatican nitez'

also, U didn't mention Orbital, who R rather good
esp. Orbital:orbital (brown cover)

offline Ross from Canada on 2002-06-28 19:47 [#00288652]

the only gg song i've heard is long whiney unfortunately..i
did like it though..i've only heard orbital's mix of the
saint theme honestly, are they a more techno-oriented group
or do you think i'd like their stuff?

Plaid - Double Figure

Black Dog Productions - Bytes

offline smokehammer from Saigon (Vietnam) on 2002-06-28 20:04 [#00288664]
Points: 1463 Status: Lurker

Ross.. Global Goon is really quite light and subtle
melodies, reminds me a little of SAW 85-92. "Stans' slaves"
is worth the admission price alone, with a hint of Alberto
Balsalm and Heliosphan about it. Some tracks have hi-hats
that have a vaguely oriental feel ...VN Is definately a
great album for your collection.

Orbital are techno 4 sure, but don't let the 'repetitive
beats' tag put U off, most people find them the most
accessible techno combo for IDM afficionados, because theres
so many layers to their music, they experiment with ambient
synth loops, warped voice samples, and all manner of
jiggery-pokery... 'Brown' is a classis. Look it up on
amazon.com/music. I bet its a 5-star rating. In-sides is
excellent too. And Snivilisation.

thank you very much smokehammer! i'm off to look for orbital
samples, and a bit more global goon too..i'll come back soon

hours :)

ah, halycon + on + on was in cky2k..that's a fabulous
song..i'm downloading time becomes and lush 3-1

offline smokehammer from Saigon (Vietnam) on 2002-06-28 20:16 [#00288668]
Points: 1463 Status: Lurker

lush 3-1 ahhhh...
listen to it the whole way through
That tunes grows in strength on me every listen, and I've
heard it about 200 times at least.

'The girl with the sun..." on In-sides is another veryy fine
one to check out for starters if U can

offline Ross from Canada on 2002-06-28 20:18 [#00288670]
Points: 366 Status: Lurker

alright i certainly will smokehammer..i didnt much care for
the time becomes, but that is the intro to the cd right? so
it prolly works with the whole thing

offline smokehammer from Saigon (Vietnam) on 2002-06-28 20:23 [#00288672]
Points: 1463 Status: Lurker

'Time becomes' isn't a track, its an experiment. I think
they sampled it from Planet of the Apes/Star Trek/Star wars
or some other film "There is the theory of the moebius..."

I always skip it, but lush 3-1 is awesome , another thing
altogether

offline Ross from Canada on 2002-06-28 20:24 [#00288673]
Points: 366 Status: Lurker

lush 3-1 was nice, but it didnt quite do too much for me,
maybe it needs repeated listens..it seemed better than other
techno i have heard, but not different enough still from
that genre..allison goldfrapp is on in-sides i hear, how is
in-sides as a whole?

Ross>

If you aint into Orbital...you aint.
thats the way it is
everyones different, thats cool

Like I said, lush 3-1 grows and grows on you with each
listen. It expands from bog-standard downbeat techno into an
epic spiritual anthem . Listen to it when high, when low,
when confused, when together, when driving somewhere, when
lying in bed... it's a real leveller. It always brings me
back to who I am.. maybe its just me.

In-sides is fantastic (IMO). "The Girl".., uplifting,
intoxicating, revellery , "Dwr Budr" (Welsh for Dirty water)
meditative, hypnotic, "The Box" chaotic, adrenalising,
"somewhere out there", a long journey through the
senses..."Adnans".. the list goes on... a great complete
album to own.

Its maybe just me. I love Orbital (although their latest
stuff is disappointing). Its one of the few "techno" artists
I can get fixed with.

Snivilisation is great too.. "Are we here", "forever" ,
"science friction".... check them out , maybe its not U're
kind of thing, but its great music nonetheless .

PS> I'm only saying all this cos' tha stuff U listed sounded
like my taste, and I think U would enjoy this stuff too.
It'll grow on you, honest :)

A few recommendations

Jega - Geometry (THE most under-rated 'IDM' artist and
album. Each track is different and all are good.)

The Cinematic Orchestra - Motion (The best full-length debut
since BOC. Excellent down tempo chillage. Smooth as silk
buttah)

The Irresistable Force - It's Tomorrow Already (Down-tempo
ambient with killer sampling. I've never heard anything
else like it)

It looks like you need to check out some Ninja Tune artists.
Their roster is nearly WARP's equal.
