Well what do you know? I finally buckled down and gave Chiastic Slide another serious go despite it being the last cd I want to hear from Ae. I just finished listening to it now. I was laying in bed the whole time and it was like over in a flash (i never fell asleep). I had my eyes shut and it was just so cool. New things I came out with:
Heard the phrases "Shoot me in the head" (I think) and "Oxygen" spoken in the track Recury. I mean it was so so faint and so far away in the background I could be wrong but there are short phrases spoken in the first few bits of the song...then other stuff comes in and over takes it. Recury has to be one of THE most well sequenced songs Autechre. So much happens within the cracks of a simple drum loop.
And also I came out with a feeling (an obvious one) that Chiastic is the robot / mechanical machine / city Ae always wanted..but as you all know things don't last forever and the track Pule shows them "pulling the plug" as it were [hence the name -- wow that just came across to me right this second. wow]...and basically rethinking the way they should do things. Pule ends the cd really...for me anyway. Nuane isn't on the cd either in some philisophical way and shows the city Autechre built...thanks to the machines and chaos of Tri Repetae.
After Chiastic we see them enter a more experimental stage of microbiotics and scientific discoveries of LP5. On another philisophical level...the time between Chiastic and LP5 could be 500 -1000 years. Im reminded of the time difference at the end of the movie Artificial Intelligence. From the future...to REALLY in the future.

although "chiastic slide" is a bit repetetive i love this heavy, cracking beats... Mr Amon you have right- there are thousands of years between lp5 and chiastic slide. chiastic slide shows robots taking control of human civilisation and lp 5 is the peak of machines evolution.

I can't believe I was the last person to post to this topic!
Everytime a Chiastic thread comes about, I start listening to this album. In this case I have Empiricus for starting the "Favourite Pre-Chiastic Ae" thread.
Man this album kicks! This genre has never produced anything better.

I can't believe I DIDN'T post in this topic... I love this album, it's full of crunch and goodies. It's my favorite use of repetition ever, I can somehow sit through every second of Recury and not get bored.

This was my second Ae album after having Tri Rep ++ for about three weeks. (Tri Rep. was my first "IDM" album, although I had been into Kraftwerk for a couple of years) Being aware of the abstract nature of Confield and the other later releases, I thought that Chiastic would not be too disimilar in style from Tri Rep. Wrong. This thing mystified me - in a bad way. I didn't like it. It wasn't entertaining or fun. Listening to it was like doing homework or something, but the thing is, for some reason I could not stop listening to it. The album was like a puzzle that I was on the verge of figuring out, but couldn't quite solve. Pretty soon all of my other recent electronic purchases (such as RDJ album, Amon Tobin, Music Has the Right) were put on hold as I listened to Chiastic 2-3 times a day on headphones. After about three or four weeks of that - enlightenment. It was simply a matter of letting go of all of my preconcieved notions about what music was "supposed" to be, and simply let Ae stimulate my nervous system without resisting. Just pay attention to what is occuring in the moment and stop trying to anticipate.

Should I get this Ae LP, then? I have their first 3, but each of them, although excellent in places, tends to have a couple of lacklustre tracks. The last 3/4 on Tri Repetae, for instance, are unnoticable compared to the first five.

Another cool, snowy day in Montreal and this album is saving me.
45km winds while waiting for the bus sucks.
I will never let this thread die.
