If I could be serious for a sec....

which Im sure I can be...

I just read the post where people were arguing whether or
not IDM was 'intelligent'. Well I don't think of
'intelligent' as the rest are 'dumb' just as think of it
this way that IDM takes more time to create. Some boy band
member who knows simple chords could EASILY sit down at a
piano and come up with something for his lame-o poem about
how he wants to get back with his girl. BUT! Let's see him
at a computer and spend 5-7 hours developing polyrhythms.
You see where Im going? IDM is more intelligent than pop in
the way its created. Im no smarter than my neighbor because
of sean and robs work or rich's but I consider my music to
be at a higher level of emotion / complexity than what the
radio gives off all day.

Are there any thoughts?

[I want this to be a serious post for once]

it's been 'labelled' inteligent by people who've got
nothing 2 do with the artform itself. Just 2 put it in a
box,.so it's recognisable for the large public.

this 'genre' thread has been on countless
messageboards/forums whatever before.
Fuck describing music in 1 term,.when it is so much more.

It's like when U used 2 have "intelligent drum & bass" back
in the days',...why intelligent? Maybe because the public
was in need of a next fad. and 'cause ragga-hooks got
boring.

personally I don't care how its labelled,...I'm in it for
the beatz.

beats only? im in it for the whole package. That doesn't
show anything if you're in it just for beats.... i
mean...think about the whole picture. a peice without beats
or rhythm is just as good to me ... as long as its composed
well.

I dunno, how can you call a genre of music intelligent?
Really, if Autechre, or Squarepusher sat down and started
fiddling with their equipment and came up with cool sounds,
and put it all together to create a song is that really
intelligent, or just working hard? If Boards of Canada had a
song in their heads (which they said they did with
Gyroscope) and they tried their darndest to get it out isn't
that more intelligent? My point is that it's hard to say...
it's stupid to call a genre intelligent, and it's just damn
arrogent...

another thing, for me, if the song doesn't have an emotional
element to it it probably won't do much for me... there is
only so long I can appreciate a cool drum beat, or whatever,
if it doesn't touch me in some way it probably won't have
longevity for me... that said, any type of music can do it
for me... so, it's not really intelligence, or complexity I
look for in music, but some emotional element in the
music...

like I said :

"I'm in it for the beatz"

Sorry can't help it,.....not just IDM (bah),.but music
generally,.can be anything,......I'm a breakbeat loving
fool!

I think pop can be done well, and intelligently... it's
harder to write a great pop song, like The Beatles'
''Strawberry Fields Forever'', or The Beach Boys' ''Wouldn't
it be Nice'', then it is to make a great IDM song.

Brian Wilson and John Lennon are smarter than Sean Booth and
Rob Brown, mark my words.

That's true Funkmaster. But Im not calling the genre
'Intelligent'...i wish that word would go away so we could
stick with Mathtronica ;) But seriously, it does take more
effort than pop music. I don't know..I guess I have a
problem with pop music then cause all i hear over here is
the same thing over and over and over again. My brain
hurts. I look for originality so I can see new things in
music.

I get tired of some guy 'wanting to get it on' in his low
rider. Goodness sakes...

Without a doubt the beatles did place a lot on the music
world and I won't disagree with you Ophecks. Beatles were
ahead of their time. What Im talking about when I say pop
is the mainstream that EVERYONE listens to...Im not talking
about Beatles pop or Beachboys pop...not that stuff.

Yeah, that's true.

Plus, the Beatles and the Beach Boys were making music in
the '60s. Music was so much more exciting. These two bands,
and the Stones, were in a VICIOUS creative war... The
Beatles' Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds (maybe the best
album ever), Pet Sounds inspired Sgt. Pepper, Sgt. Pepper
inspired the Stones...

And it was all pop! ''Pop'' today has taken on a different
meaning, infortunately. It's not a war to get the best, more
innovative music possible, just a war to sell records.

But there's still good pop out there... the Strokes are
great, and although some may disagree, I really think Travis
is great!

And Sloan, from MY province, is the best pop around,
BRILLIANT guitar pop.

I don't mind Sloan's new song where in the video a chamber
orchestra is just sitting there looking at blank sheet music
and that grumpy kid comes in and checks out the girl. I
forget what song that's called. I got that stuck in my
head.

I used to hate them before cause they had that rock song
where in the video they had all these people saying stuff
about rock and roll and this one girl came on like 'rock is
the best cause it lets the artist come out in a totally
wicked and artistic way' i was like shut up! but ... i
didn't like that song and was totally turned off by sloan.
their new song is cool though.

i never liked the term IDM

Music"

then suddenly i heard everyone saying "IDM" and i was
like... um

i dont like this to be labeled as dance music.

i dont dance to it.

id morel likely dance to pop then this.

so it has beats

who cares.

zeus has a point....

IDM is not dance music imo.
Yunno, If you think about it... It must be one heck of a
hard thing to dance to autechre or most of richard's music.

Dance music for me.... is.....
Let's put it this way, if i Think of electronic dance music,
the first thing that pops up in my mind is....

PRODIGYYYYYYYY!!!!!!

yeah

the 4 to the floor stuff is dance music.

now given there is "IDM" out there with 4 to the floor... i
think its more of a stylistic thing, then an actual attempt
to make people dance.

dance music is the junk they have on those cd compilations
you order in the mail, and are advertised on tv.
"The greatest hits of this week!"

fuck IDM
viva experimental electronic music EEC

ha

yeah boyyyyy

Yeah, the ''dance'' thing is just fucked...

I'd NEVER dance to this stuff. To me, this is ''sit on your
ass and listen intently'' stuff. Try dancing to Vletmrx21 or
Rhubab...

Fuck, what an awful little term ''IDM'' is.

from now on il refer to it as EEC (experimental electronic
music)

yeah, one time i said "IDM"

and i had to explain it

its electronic, like most dance, but you dont dance to this,
cause it is complex. and ment for listening and etc and etc

blah

its been already said I am sure but...:
why do we care about the name??...its music... and music can
be good from rock to pop, to electronic or heavy...and it
can be intelligent

offline nacmat on 2002-06-11 21:46 [#00261048]

sorry I replied before ending:

as I was saying it can be intelligent being any kind of
music...so calling this intelligent dance music, is like
saying its more clever than the rest... besides its
stupid... we can call it however we want, why call it as the
labels want?

do we need to know the name of aphex´s music to enjoy it
more?? do we need the term IDM to describe it? I dont think
so.
do I care calling it IDM....NO, I really dont care, so if
everybody says its IDM its fine with me... but I wont feel I
am smarter for listening to IDM
