Hey,

i've never heard plaid before and i was just wondering how
everyone else here would rate them. Sometimes i hold off on
listening to new artists...that way ihave something new to
listen to while waiting for new AFX or Squarepusher stuff to
come out...

so what albums are cool...what kinda stuff do they
make...suggestions welcome

and plaid in general is great... I saw them live, they rock
the house! incredibly dancable!

it is considered electro I think. double figure is very
dancable, nice back beat through, and they usually keep a
pretty high tempo.

IDM..melodic..musical..playful....some vaguely eastern
(europen) sounding tracks Not for threes some heavier
drillier moments as well but not too many..Bjork sings on a
track (always a plus)(my rating 9)..hip hop elements are
quite prominent of Rest Proof Clock Work(8) Double Figure's
got an edgy highly technical sound and yet retains all the
best elements (10..agree with nacmat on that) both not for
three's and Double Figure of kinda supernatural/mystical
elements going on (hence the tour with Coil?)...Trainer I
couldn't get into at all..it's odds and ends..bits and
pieces..some techno some acid house..earlier stuff..for
completists only IMO (5)

I always told ppl that if you splice aphex twin beats and
orbital melodies you get plaid. but looking back I think
its kind of wrong...

no..Plaid melodies are far more intricate and complex than
Orbital's...Orbital are excellent at pads, stringy harmony
bits but their melodies can be a bit predictable some
times...To me Plaid comes close to being a less eccentric
Uziq but with once again slightly better melodies..
*quickly scans for spelling errors*
*sighs in relief* we are cool..I think..if not..blame it on
over reliance on the red squigglies in MS Word..

cool basslines too, and great beats so just listen to them
already!

Rest Proof Clockwork is my favorite.
Hip hop for preschoolers.

So many people have been asking me about plaid lately!
a website represented by our national radio station has me
featured and compares me to them.
i don't really see the similarities, but any press is good
press!
they are quite good and layered and have a 'pop' melody
sense to them.
more of a hip hop feel then IDM.
double figure is a great album, with the last track being my
favourite!
i can listen to it over and ever again, and again, and
again.....

you can check out my stuff here
knell.ca
let me know what you think!

Plaid is very eclectic. it's hard to stick them in a genre,
they're usually kinda funky and they always have a bit of an
oldskool hiphop vibe. there's often some swingy/loungey old
"dance" music vibe going on too. they do all kinds of stuff
though, some stuff that sounds almost classical, some stuff
that sounds almost tribal, some almost toneless abstract
sounding stuff. but most importantly, I'd say they're the
most playful and the most emotional of any people tagged as
"IDM" or whatever. the word I always use in describing them
is "friendly", not meaning that they're really poppy or
trendy sounding or whatever, it's just the kind of music
that makes you smile...er makes me smile anyway. a
lot of people don't like them, I think because they're
too emotional for them.
so that's my stuff on Plaid. :)

Hi USACID, glad to hear you like Plaid. Well, all albums are
recommended! Try also to find old Black Dog releases. Until
the period 89-95 Plaid and ken Downie formed "Black dog" and
is in the same style. It's was touching my soul sooooooo
deep in the early '90's. I recommend heartly the albums:
Bytes (FUCKING GREAT IDM!!!!!!!!!)
Spanners on Warp. On GPR you find "The temple of transparant
balls" and "Parallel". The early Black Dog EP's are great
too, but very high priced nowadays. Cheers.
