I'm not a fan of ANY of those artists! I can tolerate Beck, and DJ Shadow is pretty good, but overall, pretty crappy list. :-p
Bjork, though... I'm going to listen to her stuff this week, and maybe I'll be a fan... but I haven't liked what I've heard so far.

it is not all that I have, just a list of artists that sometimes I ve read in this MB, they do different styles around electronic music and I know that many of them are not very popular here, not even for me, now that I have "grown up" in my music likings, but I just wanted to compare your opinions with mine.

I'm a big fan of Bjork, Tricky, Massive Attack, and Portishead. I like the old Underworld, just haven't listened to anything new. Some of Moby's stuff is alright, but I haven't listened to very much of it.

ok, ive heard OF almost all of these people, and actually heard.... hm.. most of them i guess
chemical brothers (not really... a FEW (and i mean few) songs are alright i guess)
leftfield (never heard) underworld (ya.... i used to like them more though) moby (ugh.... no, NO, NO!! well, just porcelin) red snapper (never heard them, though i should) goldie (alright... for dance music that is) ian pooley (haven't heard) fatboyslim (no, way to poppy sounding for me) fila brazilia (never heard) k&D (never heard..... unless it stands for someone who i HAVE heard of)
primal scream (heard of them..) beck (some of his earlier (well, NOT new) stuff is alright) bjork (YA! under-rated imo. VERY under-rated! her music is surprisingly original and.. well, great.... she IS alternative)
leila (only heard OF them) massive attack (nonono.... see fatboy) tricky (only heard a bit... alright i guess (haven't heard enough to judge)
portishead (i like a few of their songs.. but i haven't heard much)
dj shadow (hm.. not really. no, not really) terranova (not heard of them) roni size (alright in terms of jungle... but then, its still only dance music)
prodigy (one of my steping stones electronic music and eventually 'idm'. i used to like them way more. now that ive heard autechre, afx, []pusher.. prodigy just sound boring and simple in comparison. i dont mind them though)
but enough from me..... what do YOU think, Nacmat?!?!?!

about those jungle/drumnbass people (goldie, roni size)...... its alright, i dont mind it, andi listen to it occasionally
(pretty rarely these days, and only for like 1 song at a time)
also.... i cant listen to them the way i listen to "idm" artists.... its just to repetative and boring.. it IS dance music afterall
its just background music for me... while doing math homework (hence the "rarely" part.... lol!) for example

being from north america, i have had all this crp shoved down my throat since it's conception years and years ago.
i'm sure anyone form Kanada or the US can sympathise. i have most of those artists in my collection [although now they are xtremely dusty] because they did something original at one point in their career.
some of that stuff is good, but most of it is extremely limited in it's creative approach.
if you want to call that style in it's defense then so be it, but why bother to release the same thing over and over again?
take björk, for example. she has done some kewl stuff, but if you check out who is actually behind most of this stuff, it's current 'underground' artists.
her contibution is mainly vocals with some bits here and there, but how many times can she sing the same way in a song, yet get a highly talented individual to write an amazing backdrop?
portishead dropped off the planet because they came out with a stellar ground breaking first album and then followed it up with what sounded like b-sides from the first.
this leads me to believe that either marketing controls a lot of the artists or the artists loose the focal point of their creative energy somewhere along the line.
q or cs?

actually, i've been listening to björk for the better part of 11 years now.
have all her albums. her father was a composer, and as such she was classically trained.
she approaches 'trendy' musicians , as you say, for she respects their approach to music as something she could not achieve.
she has approached afx, amongst others many times, who have declined her offers.
take a guess as to why!
if you actually listen to her song construction and vocal scales/melodies you will hear that they are repeated through several songs on many different occasions.
much the same way trent reznor of NIN recreates his orchestral elements in his own compositions, although she is nowhere near as sophisticated, nor individualistic.
björk actaully has 'recruiters' who work at music stores who listen to all the 'underground' artists and they inform her/send her copies of who is up and coming.
it's not that there is anything wrong with this approach. take david bowie for example. he would come into the studio for every album and hand brian eno a stack of albums and say, 'i want to sound like this'.
the difference between david bowie and björk and what makes him great, is that he evolves, completely changing and growing, no matter where he takes his sound, he asimilates and adapts.
what is sad about björk is that she has so much potential, yet she is still singing the same way on vespertine as she did on post and even before when she sang with the sugar cubes.
i will continue to pick up her albums in the hopes that perhaps some day she will come to that realization.

she composed all the music on selmasongs, she has production credits on her albums but debut, and there's a whole mess of keyboards and drum machine programming credits to her on all her albums. that's hardly just vocals and "some bits" like you claim. to the best of my recollection, there's only one song on vespertine that she didn't practically write herself - and that's 'heirloom' which is essentially her singing over the ensemble original.
and i disagree with you, i think her singing on vespertine is very different than on all her previous albums. it's more subdued and mature. but you're right, she does repeat a lot of chord progressions in her songs and she does repeat her best vocal tricks. but really if she didn't use them it wouldn't be the same. it's that point where her voice reaches the apex of emotion that really makes the song amazing. i'm glad you're informed about bjork but i disagree on some of your cardinal assertions.

i wouldn't call them cardinal. i read a lot. i just told you what she herself said about her own song writing and reasons for using other artists.
inever said she wasn't talented. liner notes are deceiving though. they never tell you how much of what the person did. you'd be surprised how much a producer does that is credited to the artist.
thanks for your thoughts!
