ok, this isnt IDM, or even electronic... but its amazing.
Seriously, give it a try.

Jaco Pastorios, A Portrait of Tracy
its on the Debut CD.

Its a bass solo with harmonics, it makes me want to cry its
so good.

I highly recommend it.

I don't know too many depressing instrumental tracks....odd.
If you don't mind vocals, then How to Disappear
Completely
by Radiohead is a good recommendation.

Kind of obvious, but Rhubarb from SAW2 is the saddest thing
I've ever heard. Vletmrx21 by Autechre is pretty sad, but
it's also really rousing and intense, not energy sucking
like Rhubarb.

I love Rhubarb. Say it with me. Rhubarb. Rhubarb. Rhubarb.
Rhubarb. The word just sounds so funny after a while

*cries

squarepusher - my sound
brian eno - always returning
aphex - pancake lizard
autechre - krib
godspeed you black emperor - moya
air - le soleil est pres de moi (not really
instrumental...but the singing is heavily vocodered and in
french..so it might as well be)

thanks for the suggestions, but i now pretty much everything
from ae (especially), afx and radiohead. im checking out
sigur ros.

ophecks:

it's weird, because i dont see rhubarb as a sad song, but as
a nice, relaxing, kind of uplifting song.

Really? Rhubarb just kills me every time I hear it!

Rae from LP5 is sad underneath all those harsh beats. The
melodies beneath it are just so depressing.

''but i now pretty much everything

just remembered another really sad instrumental track...
stars of the lid - requiem for dying mothers

even the name is sad...

Rhubarb making people happy... I never thought it was
possible... it just sucks the happiness right out of me... I
love it!

The ''Pet Sounds'' album by the Beach Boys depresses the
shit out of me, personally.

im looking for it on soulseek. which part should i try? 1,2
or 3?

offline wayout from the street of crocodiles on 2002-05-31 23:45 [#00245175]

1 is the saddest part, imo...but 2 and 3 are both good
too...it kinda flows together as one track on the cd...so im
not too sure of the destinction between the parts

I think lichen is sadder/better than rhubarb.

Rhubarb is one of the saddest, most depressing songs I've
ever heard... in a good way mind you... but it's like this
load is put on my shoulders when it comes on, it's so sad,
and meloncholic... I do love it though...

Lichen is amazing, although not quite as sad in my
opinion... there seems like a little bit of hope in
lichen... Rhubarb is just hopeless to me... but I still love
it to death!!! Partly for that reason!! :)

they may have included the track after part 2 as the 3rd
part...as there are nine tracks...and the last 2 pieces
consist of 3 parts...i guess it made more sense to have 3 3
part pieces, than 2 3 part pieces, 1 2 part one, and then 1
single part one....i dunnno
its all good, and all quite melancholic, though part 1 of
requiem for dying mothers is probably the saddest part...

Yeah, I would also recommend Stars of the Lid..
Some of Labradford's work too, though I can't think of any
song titles offhand.

I'de say Cliffs is a really spiritual and sad song,
especially the last 2 minutes. I love that track, and kind
of assosiate it with an eternal longing for something I just
can't put my finger on, mabey it's love?

stars of the lid - requiem for dying mothers has only 2
parts - the 3rd must be mislabeled.

first sad instrumental track that comes to mind is by red
house painters - the hidden track on the "shock me" single.
