Tell me your opinion....

What kind of question is that? "techno" also isn't really
the word for it. Just stick with "IDM" or intelligent dance
music. As for if it exists or not. . . well, it's a real
electronica sub-genre, of course it exists!

offline hannibal from United Kingdom on 2002-05-31 18:33 [#00244720]

i'd say that there's electronic music that requires more
thought and attention to detail to produce, and also more
concentration to listen to.

pls don't call it idm...it gives me a rash.

Very interesting question. Well, i hate the name IDM
(=Intelligent dance music). A lot of "IDM" is danceable.
When you say intelligent, you say immediately other styles
are not. This is ridiculous. Bye the way, IDM is a new word
of the last years. The genre itself exist more than 10
years.

Yes, and only intelligent intellectuals are allowed to
listen to it ;)

Bleh. I still haven't figured out all the naming
conventions. I have only a very shallow grasp of any of the
genre's/label's.

As far as any one genre or the other actually existing,
that's a subjective question, so you have to answer it for
yourself. I'm sure it exists for somebody out
there.. ya know?

I think some techno can be intelligent (plastikman)...but
its not as 'intelligent' as autechre.

what do you mean by intelligent?

"what do you mean by intelligent?"

it's a stupid fucking confusing offputting elitist label
invented by middleclass white boys who don't dance .
music is music and all forms of music need some intelligence
to make -

indeed - warp are to blame when they released the artificial
intelligence series cos they hated the breakbeat rave of the
time - now they play breakbeat at their raves .....
i'ts silly to not have patience with things - every genre
will adapt else it get's boring - it's the survival of the
fittest in musical trends - and that is where it's
intelligence and creativity comes from - also the artistic
parameters of the people who make the tracks and the
reception to them from the audience..

offline Deathsmith from Brussels (Belgium) on 2002-05-31 20:13 [#00244832]

Not really. . . . everyone on this board MUST to some extent
like IDM, since that's what genre Aphex Twin is part of.

i ccan't think of any distinctive characteristics of this so
called genre though ..... which makes it rather a non
event..

i know - let's set up a panel of i.d.m fans and play them
some music that they can label intelligent to stupid on a
one to ten scale - then we can reveal the genre and the
actual iq of the artists afterwards and see if they're
correct in their assumptions - good idea or absurd?

dexter, the leader from offspring, had a microbiology
diploma if i remember... so i think he has a quite high IQ,
but is his music classified as "intelligent" for all that?

arent most of their lyrics social commentary? i believe most
of the old fogeys that make up Offspring have degrees of
some sort....

what was the 1st "techno" song?

there was a guy making a piece with strings, and he puts the
drums to it and thought..... "hey wots this? lets call it
techno!" but wot IS that piece?

offline uzim on 2002-05-31 20:43 [#00244874]

i meant classified as intelligent... as far as i
know, "idm" is the only "label" which really claims to be
intelligent (the name "idm", not the artists themselves),
whereas there is other intelligent music, which doesn't
claim to be intelligent...

they've been making electronic music since the 40's and
50's...and then in the 70's kraftwerk started making
electronic dance music ...and then in the 80's some guys in
detroit (like juan atkins) started calling the electronic
dance music they were making 'techno' ...so im not really
sure you could find an official first 'techno' track...

well there is some techno, which is
really nice and has "unexpected" elements;
you don't know what's going to happen
in the track...

Funny...prolly a few members on this board don't even fancy
that Richard bloke's music too much.

Stop calling it names and just learn to enjoy it. If pressed
to describe, it can easily be described as plain ol'
honest-to-goodness electronic music.

i never really thought of "intelligent" dance music as
referring to mental capacity...i had thought it was kind of
the same sort of use as the word in the phrase "intelligent
life." until everyone starts calling their songs 2348.ii
and brigramic reflections and other dumb, shitty names.

Unlimited song that went "techno techno techno techno"

And yeah, obviously some dance music isn't intelligent!
