extract out of aphex interview

Another term that's been used to describe your work is
'intelligent dance music.'

I just think it's really funny to have terms like that. It's
bascially saying 'this is intelligent and everything else is
STUPID.' It's really nasty to everyone else's music.
(laughs) It makes me laugh, things like that. I don't use
names. I just say that I like something or I don't

he's also talking about music he likes

Drexciya The Quest
Erik Satie 'Trois Gymnopédies'
Return of the DJ's
Squarepusher Big Loada
Luke Vibert Big Soup
Batucada The Sound Of The Favelas
Best of Acid 1
Ween Pod and Pure Guava
Les Baxter The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter
Serge Gainsbourg
Tod Dockstader 'Luna Park'
Drexciya are from Detriot, part of Underground Resistance- I
really like them. Return of the DJ's is music from
California- it's avant-garde hip-hop, taking it to another
extreme with a lot of excessive scrathing and cutting up.
Batucada are from South America with really, really fast
rhythms with screaming and shouting with no songs. Best of
Acid 1 is old school from '88 with all of these Chicago
producers and acid tunes. I love Ween- I really, really
like them and everything they do. I'm well into Les Baxter-
a right weirdo. I have this double CD by Gainsbough that I
like a lot with 'Lemon Incest' on it. I've got CD's by Nurse
With Wounds and Harry Partch with me but I haven't listened
to them yet

i hate the term idm, and i don't think of RDJ's music as
dance music at all, even if some of it is dancy its for
listening to before anything else

use braindance then dammit.....

i like the term idm...its perfect, and its true.

aphex=sophisticated.

about selling records

I'll probably sell more albums as things go on, but I'm
still surprised to sell one hundred. I can't comprehend
people actually buying my records anyway. So when you sell
worldwide like a hundred thousand records, I just can't
imagine it -- like a hundred thousand people buying my
records. It's pretty bizarre. I wouldn't care if they didn't
buy my music anyway."

aphex=sophisticated therefore Aphex is for listening to not
dancing to therefore the word dance should not be used to
describe his music even if intelligent is before it

Braindance is just as bad as IDM, and even MORE cheesy
sounding!

Nevertheless... IDM is so convenient, and everyone knows
what you're talking about when you use it, which artists you
mean... so I'll use it anyway.

The DANCE part pisses me off... it's not dance...

''inteligent drum music?''

Nope. What about Selected Ambient Works Volume 2?

IDM is here to stay, unfortunately...

EEM
"Experimental Electronic Music"
Would be a better term perhaps?

about his tank
hehe

Okay, the question we're all dying to know -- how fast does
it go? "Forty-five mile per hour forwards and backwards.
It's pretty fucking noisy though, if you go that fast. It's
deafening near the engine. Once you go over thirty, it's so
loud. But it'll do 45 over rough terrain -- really hilly,
bumpy land."

acuse well, it explains it perfectely.

braindance won't work because its not dance music! dance
music implies techno, trance, drum n bass, stuff thats made
to be played in clubs ...RDJ's music is for listening to and
lots of it is not dancy, like SAW2 and half of Drukqs

offline Ophecks from Nova Scotia (Canada) on 2002-05-26 01:30 [#00235135]

What? If IDM doesn't explain it well, how does braindance?

Brain=intelligent
Dance=dance

Am I missing something?

about public toilets

"In Seattle, all the public toilets didn't have any doors on
them. It was well strange. What's that all about? I had to
take a shit, and they're was like twenty people in a row
going for a shit, and I was like, "uh." So after about ten
minutes, I thought it was quite wicked actually. I was quite
into the idea of it."

Term is cool or fine. It sucks.

braindance doesnt mean danec music

it means, it make syour brain dance
brain candy

ie. your brain enjoys it
ie. your brain is dancing inside your head.

not actual dance music

but it implies dance music unless ur explanation is attached
to it at all times, i don't like any name with "dance" in it
for RDJ, it doesn't suit his music

so, ppl dance at lots of gigs, even rock gigs and nsync
gigs... that doesn't mean his music is dance music...

The Backstreet Boys make the brains (as redundant as they
are) of little girls ''dance''... it's candy for their
little sugar sweetened medullahs.

Besides, braindance sounds so... BAD... automatically
conjures up images of raves and dancing and brain altering
substances, yech...
