Right.

Quite a while ago I tried to get people on this messageboard
to download my music, but people didn't really want to do
so, claiming I was "spamming" the board.

Well, I've been posting on here a while now and I want to
try again. You all know me a bit better now, and I think I
know some of you a bit better too. I would quite genuinely
value your opinions regarding my music.

So, please, go here: http://www.yorklabs.co.uk/manicminer/

and download my MP3s! Then, tell me what you think! The
first track to try is "Dark", as that is the most complete
track on there, then perhaps "Jeff", and then finally "Wharf
Ebb".

I have loads of other half-finished stuff, and if you like
the stuff on my site I might be inspired to finish my other
stuff and put it up on there too!

I would also be quite interested in collaborating with
someone if anyone's up for it. I've sort of arranged to
collaborate with a couple of people on here before, but
nothing's come of it, so only serious offers please!

well i downloaded wharf ebb. nice! the song obviously
consists of 2 parts, which is nicely done, except that in
the 2nd part nothing much happens imo!! otherwise real
smooth!

C'mon, more feedback please, people!

Thanks Netlon. To be honest, Wharf Ebb is a bit of a mess
and needs rearranging. I want to take the analogue synth
bit out of the middle as I don't like it, and there are some
bits that are too short and some bits too long. Try "Dark"
for a more complete track.

Manic Miner:

I just finished the game you take your name (and avatar)

like that anymore (although they are planning to re-release
it on the gameboy advance :) )

Not bad. Dark I think it was... yes..... problems....... it
sounded quite rough. BUt thats actually ok, and could be a
good thing too depending on who you are. Over all I liked
the song, it was more than decent. The overpowering synth at
the start is great too..... just nice. good work. ha.. now
with the deal check out mine.

Reflex: Thanks man. Glad you like it and I value your
opinion. I'm downloading your tune now and I'll tell you
what I think in a few minutes.

Reflex, just listened to Grey Shift to Six:

I like it. It sounds like it's building up to something
though, so I reckon it would be a good opening track on an
album or EP, building up to something faster or louder.
It's atmospheric and I like the plodding nature of the
beats. It reminds me of Dead Cities-era Future Sound of
London, which is definitely a good thing. What did you use
to make it?

I'm going to give your other tracks a listen now.....

The intro to Her Soft Rain is VERY nice....

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2002-05-23 21:57 [#00232084]
Points: 1423 Status: Lurker

Right, listened to all of Her Soft Rain, and I really liked
it!

I love the long, atmospheric build-up, and I'm always a fan
of dark, atmospheric strings, so I enjoyed those too. The
electro beats were simple but very nice. And of course, the
rain sample sets the scene even further. It's a good, dark,
atmospheric track.

I'm not too sure what it reminds me of, but I think it would
be good as music to some kind of sinister film.

Again, what did you use to make the track?

I'm going to listen to your other track now!

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2002-05-23 22:03 [#00232095]

Able to Guide:

I love the way it all starts to kick in at about 1:52. And
those synth sounds that come in after 2 minutes or so are
nice as well.

Reflex, I think you're on the right lines with your music
mate. Keep it up! But do tell me what you use to make your
tunes, as I'm always interested in this.

I think yours are some of the better pieces of music I've
heard from people on this message board, as they're
relatively accessible, whilst still being "leftfield". I'm
not too keen on stuff that becomes so experimental that it's
unlistenable.

You're good!

I'm listening to them now. I like "Dark" good transitions
whilst keeping the main rhythm going. Good minimal use of
samples too.

How long have you been making music & what do you use?

Do you make your own levels for manicminer/jsw?

Listening to wharfebb now...

Don't like the intro, it makes a noise like undercooked
vegetables do on your teeth when you bite them :) it's not
my sort of music, but it does get better as the track goes
on...

Jeff is cool, nice beats to it reminds me of a track by
ambrosia.

Thanks Ceri

Been making music for a few years now. At the moment I just
use soft synths, although on some of my tracks there are
samples from synths I've owned in the past: Juno 60,
Prophecy, Trinity.

All the beats are written with Fruity Loops.

And I agree, Wharf Ebb is a bit of a dodgy track.......needs
a bit of work. They all do really though :).

I never finish stuff off - these are my most complete
tracks, and at best I would say that these are 60% complete.
I really need to work with somebody else, at least so that
they could finish me sodding tracks!

Okay i just finished listening to Dark. Its not bad at all.

I think the only thing it needs is a little more variation.
Change up the beat and the note progression of that starting
synth sound and you'll have an A+ song.

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2002-05-23 23:21 [#00232218]

Hey Weatheredstoner :)

Thanks for the feedback. I undestand what you mean about
the beats, but what do you mean about the note progression?
Just a slight variation, or a key change or something
completely different?

Thanks again
mm

Actually anything could work, its all up to you.

You could have a nice climax 3/4 of the way through the
song. All it takes is a simple keychange or adding some new
notes.
