Well, if its recognised as original its described as such..
if its not worth listening to, it doesn't get listened to
unless through some industry fluke which we seem to be
having a lot these days.. Therefore the flukes are become
normal and high standards are lowered and you have to be
careful not to hit your groin on said lowered bar. *rants*

Anyway its kind of hard to define original. I've never heard
your work but in terms of music, if it hasn't been done or
if its not being approved, what's the point?

You can't sample: James brown, herbie hancock, Isaac hayes,
average white band, lou donaldson, parliment, bootsy
collins, the police. these artists have already been
heavily sampled. If you know an artist has sampled
something and then you go and sample the same thing thats
lame and unoriginal.

Also, in my opinion you shouldnt remix: Aphex twin,
squarepusher, richard devine, etc. there music is complete
there is nothing that you can do to an Aphex twin song to
make it sound better. The point of a remix IMO is revise a
song and implement changes that make it sound better than
the original. Unless your aphex, squarepusher, luke vibert,
or richard devine or someone that g00d your not worthy to
remix them. APhex could remix squarepusher or vise versa,
but if your just some joe with a computer i think its
disrespectful to there music to even try to remix someone
that good

Also, in my opinion YOU shouldnt remix:

This is off the topic and is NOT direct to YOU pesonnally.
Its some what related because ive heard people say there
remixing aphex on this site.

(7\) ,Vibert and the pusher have used James Brown samples
many times =)

disrespectful to there music???
Its tributes man !!! some of them are really good.

offline jimisteel from SLC (United States) on 2002-05-17 22:52 [#00224138]

I know! i agree the thing is if Sadist sampled a James
brown song NOW that has already been sample by someone else,
it would be lame dont you agree, because hes such and
obvious artist to sample and a hundered other artists have
already been there done that.

Aphex probably did it a while ago when it wasnt so obvious
and hes so damn good aphex is an exception he can sample
anyone he wants at this point because he has proven his
skill.

I used to be anti sample. And then I realized that its a
tradition in electronic music, it adds character to a song,
and you can use the samples in ways the original artist
wouldn't have thought.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-05-17 22:57 [#00224146]

Its called being creative. There are plenty of uncreative
artists out there that use only their own sounds.

Drukqs is full of chopped up James loops , so is Go
Plastic.

Yes its boring to hear the same samples over and over again
with a few exceptions like Aphex.
Im sick to death of the Amen break for example.

offline jimisteel from SLC (United States) on 2002-05-17 23:01 [#00224151]

I think it would be direspectful for an amateur to try to
remix aphex, squarepusher, or richard devine. Because a lot
of there music is really fast and dense.

For instance if i myself tryed to remix aphex or pusher or
devine it could come out alright but i think it wouldn't be
a good idea in the first place because there songs are
really good and dont need to be remixed. and it would be
direspecful for me to attempt the remix.

offline jimisteel from SLC (United States) on 2002-05-17 23:10 [#00224157]

when i sample i try to find records that dont even have
copywrite or a label like mca, columbia etc on the sleeve or
record. Ive found some really rare obscure records, like
the university Jazz lab band's record on the sleeve it
doesnt even say unauthorized reproduction prohibited or
anything like that and its not on any record label.

I guess that just my opinion. For me i wouldn't sample
those popular artist because i feel its been done before too
many times.

Do WHATEVER you want, as long as you have fun and don't try
to pimp it as much better or your own work. I'd love to hear
more SP remixed, its amazing but he's done some far from
inspiring music. Music is sound, sculpt the sound to create
something original if you use other peoples stuff

the way i see it if your in a band and u do a cover of a few
famous songs here and there. it doesnt mean your
disrespecting them. same with making techno

Well, Ctrl Alt Del uses nothing else but pure Windows 2000
Professional, Red Hat 7.2, and MacOs 7.5-8.6 so ha!

As far as sampling goes, if your sampling to make mixes for
like DJ albums (i.e. The Avalanches & The Wiseguys)then
thats not lame, thats just pure fun mixing. But if you use
samples to make music and rip the artist off like The Verve,
Vanilla Ice, and Rob Base & DJ Ez Rock, then I banish you to
the kingdom of lameness where you are certian to become
king!

though there are many techno remixes of good tracks that
should NEVER have been made

yeah, when personal gain, whether monetary or not comes into
it, thats when its bad IMO

i use my mc307 groovebox and any weird shit i can find on
the internet with fruityloopz. i forgot about those twats
using sampling (was thinking more of a sitting around making
music sence)
