Monty Python's Life of Brian

In my opinion this is the greatest film ever, with the
greatest ending. Does anyone agree? Does anyone dislike
the film, and if so then why?

There was a poll recently where a load of film reviewers
named the top 100 greatest films ever made. Unsurprisingly,
the majority of films on there were big-budget Hollywood Box
Office fodder, but I decided to have a scan through to see
if the Life of Brian had made it through to the top 100 (I
really didn't expect it to have done so).

I was pleasantly surprised to see that it made it into the
top 20 (I can't remember its precise position). In fact, I
think it may have been the only British film in the top 20.

It's an absolute diamond. If you haven't seen it, I urge
you to watch it. Not only is it hilarious, it also says so
much about mankind and seems to get better every time you
watch it.

Yep Chris, that's the one.

Meho: apparently it's out on DVD as a release in America
(Region 1) by some company called Criterion, digitally
remastered with loads of extra footage on a second DVD.
It's supposed to be excellent. There's a British release
(Region 2) which basically has no extras and is supposed to
be really poor quality. I really want to get hold of that
Region 1 copy!!!!

I love that film, its so funny!

bests bits-
where he's in the prison with the old guy "oh, what i'd give
to be spat on.."

where they are queueing up to leave for the crucifiction
"first time?" and one guy nearly gets away with it, and then
the priest is fooled into taking the crucifix

aside from it being one of the funniest movies aver i think
it says a lot more about the christian religion and its
failings than any biblical film ever made
- mass hysteria
- the nature of freedom fighting
- following leaders
- cross-culture interaction etc

just look at the costunes, sets, the mood of the
film......so real compared to the technicolor of the "ten
commandments" etc.
If i were studying socio-religious morals at the turn of the
1st millenium, this film would be worth close study.
fuckig funny too!....(spike milligans scene is gold)

yeah, that's why it caused such a furore when it was
released

I remember seeing a clip of palin and gillian being slated
on a tv show by a 'respected' director calling it garbage or
something

and if it wasnt for old Georgie Harrison it wouldnt have
been made.

at the start where palin is with his wife, "One more word
out of you and i'll take you the fuckin cleaners"

the 60's and 70's these different political groups arguing
with each other even tho they fight for the same cause.

Sido: yeah, all those "People's Front of Judea", "People's
Popular Front of Judea", etc.

B3n: I agree that The Meaning of Life is a bit ropey, but
there are some classic moments, such as "Every Sperm is
Sacred"!

spikes scene:

the mob are arguing over the sandle and the
gourd(?).....they follow brian into the desert and spike is
the guy left gazing up to heaven on his own(thinking the
rest are listening) and says something like "no,......let
us.........pray.....for..."....he turns around and sees that
they've all fecked off!....he walks away
sheepishly...CLASSIC..because its totally ad-lib apparently.
(he was holidaying at the time, saw the crew and they asked
him to do something small)

I have the holy grail on vinyl which is well funny. It has
loads of funny scenes as well as the gist of the story. Kid
koala beat juggles up the camelot music in one of his mixes
too.

I think ther might even be a life of brian out ther
somewhere. I should track it down.

kellyfumbler: I totally agree. I think that (besides the
sillyness "Are there any women here?")that what happens in
that movie is probably more acurate about Jesus than what
was written in the bible.....

I got sucked into the "meaning of life" last night.....
